****Possible Spoilers Included:**** I saw this movie late one night on TV in the seventies. I remember finding it intriguing and kind of ambiguous and when I read Shelley Winters' autobiography I found out why. The film originally had a gay storyline which was censored out but which the actors continued to give hints of. Michael Rennie was in love with Vittorio Gassman, and Shelley Winters was in love with Silvana Mangano. Shelley said the script was changed so she and Rennie were having an affair, but they played it as though they were trying to make the other two jealous! Also, during the filming, Shelley and her husband, Vittorio Gassman, were splitting up, and at one point he gave her a black eye (that is why the sunglasses for part of the movie) and once, she caused him to fall from a boat into a canal. I'd love to see it again to see what I thought of it now. If you can find it, check it out.
