If you're one of many Americans not familiar with Eiji Tsuburaya, that's all the more reason to appreciate today's Google Doodle. For the search engine's daily redesign of their logo, Google celebrates the birthday of Tsuburaya, who was born on July 7, 1901. You're definitely familiar with his work, as he co-created the title creature for the original 1954 version of Godzilla, coming up with the idea to portray the monster as a man in a suit rather than through stop-motion animation. Before that, he was already an effects legend in Japan for his work with realistic miniatures in war films, such as the 1942 Pearl Harbor-bombing-commemorative propaganda effort Hawai Mare oki kaisen (The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malaya), scenes from which the U.S...

If you see a movie for the first time and swear you've heard the score before, it may not be your imagination...
Last month, the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (Afm) sued six major studios for reusing film soundtracks in other films without paying the appropriate compensation. … giant monsters in maximum security prison guarded by an Ultraman-esque super-warden named Kang.
Silly? Yes. Ingenius? Also yes, if only for the fact that these monsters are painted in hues brighter than technicolor (à la old tokusatsu TV shows), exclaim Oh my Goj instead of Oh my God (if I have to explain that reference to you, well, I’m sorry), and have pissing contests involving mechas on a conversion mission (“Go back to the lab, you load-lifters!”).
And while the genre nods and winks are endless and welcome, the most successful angle that Zander Cannon’s new book chooses to pursue is that of following hardcore prison story clichés: the outdoor gym, »

Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (Scream Factory)
This limited special edition of Clive Barker’s heavily discussed alternate cut has finally arrived. For fans of the film, this version is everything you wanted. More monsters and more narrative allow the film to progress more fitting to Barker’s intention and style.
Beautiful. The guys from Death Waltz have again given genre fans something to be excited about. The 1954 soundtrack of Toho’s “Godzilla” is stunning, a true pleasure to hear on vinyl.
The septet UK group The Laze released their accompaniment for 1925’s “Phantom of the Opera” off One Way Static Records. Styled with a range of musical influences the group makes a worthy companion score to the classic film.
