Alex Nicol solves the mystery of the murder of a blues singer
29 May 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In this Brit noir, which is a light noir, Alex Nicol plays a trumpet player doing a tour in England with his orchestra. Way behind on his sleep, he drifts into a club where he hits it off with blues singer Ann Hanslip. But after he leaves her apartment, she's murdered. Because he liked her and he's a suspect, he neglects his manager's entreaties and deals and instead goes on the detective trail.

Along the way, we hear some excellent trumpet playing by Kenny Baker very much in the Harry James style. His playing is first-rate, hitting those high Fs strongly, even if his embellishments and rhythm do not come up to those of James. Alex Nicol made his valve fingerings look real. In one interesting and realistic scene, Nicol tries out several trumpets that deliver different performance when combined with his embouchure.

Nicol gives an engaging performance. The people he runs into have a variety of problems and tangled relations that he proceeds to untangle for us in the film's finale. I recognized several actors in this one, namely, Paul Carpenter (born in Canada), Geoffrey Keen and Eleanor Summerfield. Like most movies of this type, most of the fun is in the chase. This movie is a real mystery. We do not know who committed the crime or why until the end.
