Iconic artist, filmmaker, and poet, James Broughton
It is more than appropriate that the Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton made its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival considering the documentary's subject, James Broughton can very well be considered a Godfather of independent film. More than that, he can be considered a pioneer of bizarre and expressive art that indirectly effects today's artists.
James Broughton is one of those names that, if you know it, marks you as a connoisseur of the obscure and cool. Broughton was a gay poet, filmmaker, and a shining example of West Coast weird. He embodied the life of the California bohemian and was a influential figure during the San Francisco Renaissance. In addition to that he influenced the Beat generation, and was considered a groundbreaking voice in the sexual revolution during the '60s and '70s.

FX 'Sons of Anarchy' star Michael Marisi Ornstein is a multimedia artist we love to cover. His role as amputee Chucky on the macho gritty "Sons of Anarchy' is a well-crafted quirky oddball who throws the normally uber intense cast off-kilter for a second, creating magic in scenes that balances out the drama. He will be in San Francisco for a send up of American icon Jack Kerouac Tribute at the Beat Museum: Honoring and Reinventing Kerouac.s Scroll at the San Francisco Beat Museum on the evening of October 27. Ornstein will partake in honoring Jack Kerouac.s book On the Road at The Beat Museum San Francisco, October 27, 28 and will also celebrate the upcoming release...

What do you get when you put various sets of professional killers against Federal Agents? For starters, you get Smokin’ Aces and its prequel Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball. In at least one, they blow up a clown. That has to count for something, right? My full reviews after the jump:
Smokin’ Aces is a play on words. The Aces the title refers to is Buddy “Aces” Israel, a Las Vegas magician who fancied himself a bit of a Mafioso until he fell in too deep and had to turn to the government for an out. At least, he has his agent on top of those negotiations. A suitably scorned mob boss puts a price on Aces - a cool million dollars - and, as part of the bounty, wants Buddy’s heart (silver platter optional). This contract puts would-be assassins and saviors on a collision course. The deeper some...
