Storyline

Annamaria Montorsi, ex prostituta, è in vacanza al mare con la figlia : per sfuggire ai pettegolezzi si finge vedova. E' pacata e riservata, e questo la rende benvoluta da tutti, in particolare il sindaco del paese si interessa a lei. Un giorno, per scommessa, un villeggiante che è stato suo "cliente" vorrebbe averla, ma lei lo respinge. Per ripicca l'uomo rivela a tutti la vera identità della donna. All'improvviso, la benevolenza si trasforma in diffidenza e disprezzo, e chi prima era affabile con lei vorrebbe allontanarla dall'albergo. L'intervento del sindaco non risolve la situazione e solo quando un anziano industriale, ricco e potente, decide di prenderla sotto la sua protezione, gli altri tornano a considerarla e a darle confidenza e rispetto.

At the beach.

In LA SPIAGGIA ("The Beach") Martine Carol plays Annamaria, a good-natured prostitute who takes her young daughter from convent school with her on a summer vacation at a fancy beach resort. At first she passes as a respectable woman but gradually as the truth about her profession comes to light things turn a little nasty. Those who were friendly to her at first become hostile. This racy and pungent anti-bourgeois and anti-hypocrisy "commedia all'italiana" was not widely shown when first released in America because of its then-risque' subject matter. Raf Vallone also stars. Director Alberto Lattuada was very skilled with this kind of material.
