Chased by Carleton Young et al, George Brent endeavors to bring Morris Ankrum and Karen Sharpe to safety
10 March 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Mexican Manhunt" (1953) is a modest chase movie. The cast is a good one. The exterior locations, highway and motel scenes provide a nice feeling of the chase and the remote stretches of Mexico bordering on the States. The story is not all that exciting.

The story's broad outlines are provided in the plot summary. George Brent goes to Mexico to fetch Morris Ankrum and his 18-year old daughter, Karen Sharpe, back to Los Angeles. Morris has a heart ailment and has decided after many years to testify in an old murder case. Alberto Morin, devoted to the family, joins them as they auto north. His part is stereotyped but he gives it his all. In no time at all, an attempt is made on Ankrum's life followed by a pursuit by Carleton Young and two henchmen. Young makes an effective gruff-voiced enemy. There are close calls and even a pitched gun battle in the course of eluding and tangling with the gang. The gun battle is not scripted well.

Brent tries to maintain the old magic and/or the ease with which Cary Grant handled his later-day thrillers, and he almost pulls it off. Ms. Sharpe is a bright spot in the cast, and so is Hillary Brooke who appears as a confederate of Young, driving her own convertible.

This b-movie is a pleasant enough low-budget affair now available on DVD. That helps quite a lot because the available print in the trading market was quite bad. This is a crime story but not a film noir. The small mystery element in it is very easy to ascertain early on. It's really a road chase movie and likable on that score.
