A twelve year old Joey Slade sees his father gunned down in front of him and decides that he will dedicate his life to ridding society of all outlaws. He assumes the name Jack and as an adult takes on hired gun type jobs in order to achieve his revenge. Written by
Jack Slade accidentally kills a man when he is a young boy, and never gets over it. When his father is killed by stagecoach robbers, he goes to live with the driver that becomes like a father to him. When he gets older he goes to the army, and after that is hired by Dan Traver to get rid of the men who were stealing horses. He becomes a great help and people are very grateful, but the fact that he does a lot of killing leaves its mark on him. Dorothy Malone was never so great looking as she is here. Just to see her justifies seeing the film. But Jack Slade is quite a western, specially for those who like a lot of action. There are plenty of shootouts, and Mark Stevens has a good performance as Jack. At the beginning of the film some words written about Jack Slade by Mark Twain in "Roughing It" are shown. The black and white of the film tends more to black, agreeing with the tragic mood.
