Is Ed Wood a cardboard cutout?

17 November 2011 5:53 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp make the world's worst director look charming, despite some historical fact-bending

Director: Tim Burton

Entertainment grade: A–

History grade: B+

Edward D Wood Jr made low-budget Hollywood films in the 1950s, including Jail Bait, Night of the Ghouls and Plan 9 From Outer Space. In 1980, Plan 9 was voted the worst film of all time in the Golden Turkey awards. Wood was posthumously voted worst director.

Talent

It's 1953, and aspiring film-maker Eddie Wood (Johnny Depp) is thrilled to hear that a producer is filming the story of a famous transsexual. The reason? Wood himself loves wearing women's clothes, particularly angora sweaters. He pitches himself as writing, directing and starring – "just like Orson Welles did in Citizen Kane". The result – Glen or Glenda? – fell slightly short of the critical acclaim bestowed upon Welles's movie. The New York Times said "It isn't quite a camp classic, although »

Five actors who made uglier onscreen women than Adam Sandler

10 November 2011 2:30 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

I don't think Adam Sandler will take offense if I say he makes a very, very ugly woman in "Jack and Jill." Hell, that's one of the main jokes of the movie -- it's even the joke on the movie's poster -- Sandler doesn't look much like a woman, but nobody in the film seems to notice (one character even finds him attractive, more on that in a moment).

Still, Sandler's not the first dude to look like a lady for laughs, nor is he the ugliest. He's definitely walking in the high-heeled footsteps of some fine (but not necessarily fine looking) actors. Here's five guys whom made even gnarlier looking woman onscreen than the former Happy Gilmore.

Jack Lemmon in "Some Like It Hot" (1959)

Directed by Billy Wilder

Although Sandler's playing a woman in "Jack and Jill" as opposed to a man crossdressing as a woman, his film definitely »

Kevin Kline on for dual support roles in Charlie Kaufman's next

2 October 2011 6:52 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Kevin Kline has signed on to appear in dual roles in Charlie Kaufman's next directorial effort, Frank Or Francis, according to a report by Variety. Far from being a modern take on Ed Wood's Glen Or Glenda, the film centres on online film criticism, but it sounds like a typically inventive, inverted, twisty puzzle of a movie in a vein you could legitimately dub 'Kaufman-esque.' Jack Black, Steve Carell and Nicolas Cage were previously attached to the project when it was announced a few months back. Black is playing intelligent internet troll...

Cigarette Burns Returns To Scala Forever: The Female Prisoner Scorpion Trilogy

22 September 2011 2:10 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

It’s been 18 years since the infamous Scala Cinema projected its last all-night movie marathon. But as the old cliché goes, though it may be gone, it is very far from forgotten.

The Scala represents something of a golden age for London’s hardcore cinemagoers. It was a time before the multiplexes reigned supreme, when fans of cult, grindhouse, and underground cinema could get their fix without having to trawl countless venues for something other than the latest spandex-clad blockbuster. Famous for it’s all-night screenings, after-hours drinking, and alternative cinematic delights, The Scala remains a fond memory for many, one to which an entire season has recently been dedicated.

Taking place across 27 different London screens, Scala Forever is currently showcasing the very best (and perhaps worst) of the notorious cinema’s programming. Having commenced mid-August with King Kong, the season has so far shown such diverse treats as Zombie Flesh Eaters, »

Tiff 2011: Another Take On God Bless America

19 September 2011 9:39 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Film criticism is a tricky beast. One man’s Citizen Kane is another man’s Glen Or Glenda and it’s impossible to discredit either opinion. During Tiff my esteemed college Matt Goldberg and I disagreed pretty wildly on Bobcat Goldthwait’s vicious pop culture satire God Bless America. While I can’t pretend the film is a flawless masterpiece, I was rather fond of Goldthwait’s psychotically satirical take on the material. Perhaps it says more about my pop culture stained brain than anything else, but I do feel that Goldthwait’s message and approach are valid, if admittedly twisted and a little f-ed up. I guess I’m just fond of the twisted and the f-ed up. That’s me, what are you gonna do? In the interest of debate (and inevitably, message board bashing), I thought I’d present an alternate take on this fairly divisive movie. »

DVD Review: Cult Icon Collected in ‘Big Box of Wood’

4 August 2011 11:40 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Would I love Ed Wood as much without Tim Burton’s amazing film of the same name? Probably not. I’ll admit that I can’t watch “Bride of the Monster” and Not think of Martin Landau’s Oscar-winning performance and I smile when thinking of Wood directing some of his awesomely-bad features but I’m really picturing Johnny Depp more than the actual filmmaker. Does it matter? For whatever reason you enjoy the king of Z-movie cinema, the 6-disc “Big Box of Wood” set is a treasure for cheesy movie fans.

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0

Where does one even begin to review the filmography of Ed Wood? He was a Horrible director. And yet there’s something about his most beloved works (“Plan 9 From Outer Space,” “Bride of the Monster,” “Glen or Glenda” [which is, sadly, not includes in this 13-movie set]) that reflects the overwhelming love for cinema held by their director. Ed Wood loved movies. He »

Crapologists, rejoice! The life and career of low-budget filmmaker Ed Wood has been documented in books, box sets, and movies, but there’s never been an Ed Wood DVD anthology as massive as Big Box Of Wood, a six-disc collection including 11 feature films that Wood wrote, directed, or both, along with two TV pilots and a slew of interviews with people who knew him. Conspicuously absent from Big Box is Wood’s first feature, the 1953 transvestitism “exposé” Glen Or Glenda. But otherwise, the set contains Wood’s most famous ’50s and ’60s projects: 1954’s Jail Bait (a »

Leo doesn’t want to tie the knot — that could cause Serious problems down the line!

Since their slew of sexy vacations together, Blake Lively & Leonardo DiCaprio have seemed madly in love. And while sources say Blake, 23, is ready to settle down, Leo, 36, is not interested in being tied to one woman!

In fact, Leo is so leery of commitment that it drove a wedge in his last relationship with Bar Refaeli, Star reports.

“When he and Blake first started hanging out, Leo made it clear that a big reason he broke up with Bar was because she was pressuring him to marry her,” a source says. “If Blake isn’t careful, she’ll drive him away.”

But that hasn’t stopped Blake from trying to urge Leo to tame his wild ways.

“Blake is totally serious about heading all the way to the altar,” the source says. “She’s »

Bill Says: Blake Lively — Admit Those Leaked Pictures Are Yours! You’re So Hot!

Your reps claim the pics are fake, but just roll with it — you’ve got the best body in the world!

The biggest scandal in Hollywood this week has been the leak of alleged nude photos of Blake Lively. Blake’s lawyers have fired back, saying these pics are not really her — despite obvious evidence to the contrary. I say just own the pics, Blake — you’re so hot and these naked shots certainly illustrate that!

The only upsetting thing I see about this scandal is the fact that no one is appreciating just how attractive Blake is in these pictures. I mean, it’s ridiculous. Just look at her! Seriously!

I’ve only seen bits and pieces of Blake, 23, in Gossip Girl and pretty much forgot she was in the Oscar-nominated film The Town. But with these super-sexy pics, she’s Definitely back on my radar.

Dolores Fuller obituary

22 May 2011 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Hollywood actor known for her roles in the so-bad-they're-good films of Ed Wood

There are artists in various fields whose fame rests solely on how bad their work is alleged to be. Among them are the poet William McGonagall, the novelist Amanda McKittrick Ros, the soprano Florence Foster Jenkins and the film director Ed Wood. The latter's reputation as the world's worst film-maker rubbed off on Dolores Fuller, his muse, lover and leading lady, who has died aged 88.

It would be unfair to pick on Fuller for her stiff posture and stilted delivery in Wood's movies when the others in the casts were equally awkward, mainly because of the minimum amount of takes and the lack of strong direction. The "peak" of Wood and Fuller's collaboration was the camp classic Glen or Glenda (aka I Led Two Lives, 1953), an unintentionally hilarious, well-meaning film on transvestism. The theme was particularly close »

Ed Wood's Muse Dead At 88

11 May 2011 3:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Eccentric moviemaker Ed Wood's muse has died in Las Vegas, aged 88.

Dolores Fuller, who was portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker in Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's 1994 Wood biopic, was the cross-dressing director's one-time girlfriend and star of his most famous 1950s films Glen or Glenda and Jail Bait.

The Indiana-born actress, who was a former model, met Wood at a casting call while she was working as a stand-in for Dinah Shore on the entertainer's TV show in 1952. He cast her as his leading lady in 1953's Glen or Glenda and the couple became lovers.

They split in 1955 after Wood cast another actress as the lead in his Bride of Frankenstein film - and she moved to New York to study under acting guru Stella Adler.

She also impressed as a songwriter, co-penning Elvis Presley's Rock-a-Hula Baby for his 1961 movie Blue Hawaii.

The success inspired her to write more hits for Presley films and standards like Someone to Tell it To and Losers Weepers.

Fuller also launched Johnny Rivers' recording career.

She chronicled her life in her 2009 autobiography, A Fuller Life: Hollywood, Ed Wood and Me. »

"City of Life and Death," Film Comment, More

11 May 2011 10:21 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

"Lu Chuan's City of Life and Death has the title and the feel of a monument," writes J Hoberman in the Voice. "This widescreen, austerely monochromatic, two-hour-plus collective drama — depicting the worst indignity inflicted by foreigners on modern China, as well as the most terrible atrocity in the run-up to World War II — might have been hewed from rock and colored by soot."

Further in, he notes that the film "frequently, if superficially, adopts a Japanese point of view, something that evidently infuriated a sizable chunk of the Chinese audience. (The movie would have been pulled from theaters after one week were it not for the protection of the Communist Party's chief propagandist; although a popular hit, it received no official awards.) On the festival circuit since 2009, the film has been well-received by foreign critics, recognizing a historical epic in the Griffith-Lean-Spielberg tradition."

Dolores Fuller (1923-2011)

The Los Angeles Times reports that actress Dolores Fuller, the angora-clad muse of legendarily bad director Edward D. Wood Jr., died in her home on Monday after a long illness, at the age of 88.

Fuller was a successful model and TV actress (she appeared regularly on "Queen For a Day") when she met Wood at a casting call. From The Times' obituary:

"When I got to the casting call and first laid eyes on the young Edward, I just thought he was extremely handsome, and his personality was bubbly and fun," Fuller recalled in a 1994 interview with Tom Weaver for Fangoria magazine. "Then when I found out he was also a director and writer as well as a producer and actor, I was very impressed. ... I knew immediately that he liked me, too."

Wood cast her as the lead in his infamous first film, "Glen or Glenda" (1953). The deeply personal (and, »

It's true – there are too few women presenting science on TV | Kim Shillinglaw

Kim Shillinglaw, BBC commissioning editor for science and natural history, responds to accusations that not enough women are given the chance to present science on TV

It's not often you see not one but two physicists (Brian Cox and Jim Al-Khalili) popping up on Harry Hill's TV Burp, and it's even more unusual for one of them (Jim) to be wearing a wig while playing a Beatles track.

It's one more piece of evidence that science is enjoying a cultural renaissance, and that science presenters are shining on television as never before. Brian, Jim, Iain Stewart, Marcus du Sautoy ... I could go on. But the party-pooping question some people have posed, including Alom Shaha in a thought-provoking post last year on this blog, is where are all the Female science presenters?

Over the years we've had some very strong women on science television – Kathy Sykes and Lesley Regan to name just two. »
