When Loki and Doctor Strange interview each other, we all win

28 September 2016 2:29 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston have starred together in War Horse, but now they're both part of Marvel's cinematic universe as Doctor Strange approaches. Hiddleston recently took time off from reprising his role as Loki in Thor: Ragnarok to speak to Cumberbatch about life, the universe, and many things. Interview Magazine had the brilliant idea of having Cumberbatch interview Hiddleston, two of today's hottest actors. And I don't mean in terms of attractiveness though many would say that as well. What started out as a one-way interview quickly turned into just a conversation between two friends. If you ever wanted to know about the actors' personal film interests, you're in luck! Cumberbatch: I was wondering if there was an era of film—if you had a time machine—that you could go back and be a part of? Whether it's musicals or neorealism in Italy post World War II or »

Derek Hough Came Back to Dancing With the Stars Because It's "Home"

7 September 2016 5:01 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

When Derek Hough's Broadway debut in Singin' In the Rain was postponed to 2017, he didn't take the gap in his schedule as an opportune time for a vacation—instead, he decided to work doubletime so he could return to his second home: the Dancing With the Stars ballroom. "Dancing With the Stars is my home; it's my family," he told E! News at the DWTS season 23 cast party. "For me, if I can, I will." Should Hough and partner Marilu Henner last through the end of October, he'll be pulling double duty with DWTS and rehearsals for his role in NBC's Hairspray Live! "I had some other plans, they got postponed, so all the pieces are there—they just got »

Derek Hough may not be singing in the rain this fall, but he will still be dancing with the stars. People reported Friday that the longtime Dancing with the Stars pro would be returning to the ABC reality dance competition, but now Hough has formally announced he will be back in the ballroom for season 23. "I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. This fall, I was planning on being immersed in rehearsals for Singin' in the Rain on Broadway, but due to successes of the shows currently running, that project has been delayed because there simply isn't a theatre available, »

Wonderful isn't a good enough word to describe this joyful, funny and visually intoxicating Alice Faye musical by Busby Berkeley. Decades later it became part of a big Camp revival, but the real draw is still the Benny Goodman swing music, delightful performers like Carmen Miranda, and Berkeley's bizarre Technicolor visions. Marni Nixon (1930-2016)

25 July 2016 11:53 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Marni Nixon, beloved voice of Hollywood's supersized musicals of the 50s and 60s has died of breast cancer at 86. It was a long and good and musical life, if never celebrated enough by the culture she gave so much to. It had been our long held dream to see her given an Honorary Oscar which must now be a dream unfulfilled. Because I don't have the words today, I thought I'd share a piece I wrote ten years ago on how special Marni Nixon was to me, a baby cinephile growing up with musicals as my favorite form of cinematic bliss.

Marni Nixon is my Kathy Selden

How Jodie Mack's "Curses" Was Made

Jodie Mack's Curses (2016) is playing June 28 - July 27, 2016 on Mubi in most countries around the world. It's no secret that we're big, big fans of American animator (or is it "anti-animator"?) Jodie Mack, having covered many of her films when they play at festivals, interviewed her about her "rock concert" quartet of shorts, and showed her wonderful Blanket Statement #2: It's All or Nothing (2014) last year as part of Mubi's collaboration with the New York Film Festival. Now, we're delighted to present the world premiere of the artist's new short film, Curses, made for the Chicago band Roommate and their 2015 album, Make Like. Described by the filmmaker as an "odyssey of remnants" that "re-imagines a dream-sequence love," it was made by hand-cutting marbleized paper (also made by hand!) and includes a rotoscoped homage to one of the dances in the Broadway Melody Ballet sequence in Singin' in the Rain. »

Judy by the Numbers: "Be A Clown"

22 June 2016 5:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Just as there are films that shine bright in a star's history, there are also films whose histories are controversial at best. The Pirate is an odd contradiction of a movie. As one of Judy Garland's most expensive films, it was also her first MGM bust. Released two years after childrearing had put Judy on hiatus, it was nonetheless stuck in preproduction for five years before that. While it landed Judy another hit song, the knockoff written four years later would become a classic. Though The Pirate was the loudest, brightest movie Judy had made to date, its most interesting sequences were left on the cutting room floor. What to do with The Pirate?

The Movie: The Pirate (1948, MGM)

The Songwriter: Cole Porter

The Players: Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, directed by Vincente Minnelli

The Story: The Pirate must have seemed cursed from the start. By the time Vincente Minnelli started filming, »

Cannes Review: 'Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds' Is a Touching Mother-Daughter Documentary

14 May 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Carrie Fisher has a life-sized Princess Leia sex doll in the attic of her house, but she can't figure out how it works. Her mother, "Singin' in the Rain" star Debbie Reynolds, once amassed the world's largest collection of movie memorabilia before she had to sell most of it in order to pay off her debt. These are two magnificent women who live in the shadows of their own legacies, surrounded by petrified images of their former selves. Fisher has been in the public eye since the day was born, and her tumultuous private life has always been an open book (two of them, actually), but neither she nor her mother have ever been seen quite as clearly as they are in the casually enthralling new documentary, "Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds."  Read More: Cannes Classics Highlights Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds and Women of Old Hollywood The »

No longer just Mickey Rooney's mooning gal pal, Judy Garland would finally get to play another leading role - in fact, in this movie she'd do it twice!

The Movie: Little Nellie Kelly (MGM 1940)

The Songwriter: Roger Edens

The Players: Judy Garland, George Murphy, Charles Winniger, Douglas McPhail, directed by Norman Taurog

The Story: Little Nellie Kelly was based on a hit George M. Cohan musical from 1922. However, any »
