They establish a settlement outside of Portland and as winter nears, it is necessary for McLyntock and Cole to rescue and deliver food and supplies being held in Portland by corrupt officials. Great Mann western
5 January 2008 | by (Connecticut) – See all my reviews

BEND is one of Anthony Mann's truly great westerns, the tale of a notorious shootist-turned wagon train scout leading a bunch of Missouri farmers to the promised land east of Portland, Oregon. Along the way, he saves the life of another notorious shootist (Arthur Kennedy) who at first becomes his ally and later his enemy. Trouble brews when supplies the farmers are counting on and which they ordered on their trek through Portland, fail to arrive. When Stewart goes back to Portland to see what has happened, he finds the city in the grip of gold rush fever. The supplies master is holding up the farmers' supplies on the dock and wants more money. From this point, it is out and out war. Rock Hudson in an early role as a card sharp joins forces with Stewart and Kennedy against the supplier and his army of thugs. Julia Adams is on hand as eye candy. Shot on location, with Mount Hood in the background, BEND is a truly great western. Some of the supporting cast (Harry Morgan, Royal Dano, Jay Flippen) reappeared with Stewart in Mann's less successful FAR COUNTRY two years later.
