Troubles emerge when trucker Hans Albers picks up money and Hildegard Knef
3 January 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

There's only one user review of the excellent "Nachts auf den Strassen" (1952) aka "The Mistress", aka "At Night on the Streets", aka "Detour", written in 1999. I agree fully with its assessment that this film is a minor masterpiece. And the fact that no other review has appeared in 16 years underscores the notion that this film has been unduly overlooked.

Hans Albers plays a happily-married trucker, his wife being Lucie Mannheim. They have just married off their 21-year old daughter. Albers is a straight arrow who, we are told early on, has his weaknesses like any of us. Shortly thereafter while on the road, two events occur that change his life. He happens upon an accident and picks up a bag with a lot of cash in it, enough to buy his wife the fur coat that's always been out of reach. And, at a detour, he picks up hitchhiker Hildegard Knef although he usually never picks up anyone. He learns that she lives with her supposed brother, Marius Goring; but actually he's a thief and smuggler and she is his lover.

The story built upon these events follows realistically and freshly. There are no stereotyped characters; they behave as real people might behave. The screenplay is excellent. The pacing and acting are top-notch. Most modern action-crime-thriller movies do not come anywhere near this film with respect to engaging and holding our attention while portraying mature but imperfect people. The modern film relies so heavily on exaggerated effects (swearing, grime, dark lighting, sex, special effects, super-heroism, exceptional cinematography) that it undermines our engagement. None of this kind of thing appears here. It's replaced by the evident intelligence of all the characters and their real emotions.

After seeing this film, one is glad that it was made. One feels one has found a new friend. One feels that one has found a film to join the select list of other such classics that have originated across the world.
