Confederate Major Clay Clayburn (James Craig),a southern romantic forever in love with married, plantation mistress Kathy Summers (Barbara Payton). War and her husband, Colonel Braxton Summers (Craig Stevens) separate them for a while. Clay leads a raiding party to her plantation. His mission is to seize a nearby mountain, and with four artillery pieces, destroy Union trains on General Sherman's supply line. Kath, at her plantation, signals Clayburn and his men, when trains are coming, and they destroy two trains. Then the Union army bring in a railroad cannon. Clayburn and his men destroy that, too. But commanding the Union army is Clayburn's former friend, Union Major Will Denning (Guy Madison) at West Point, who is also Kathy's fiend. Desperate at his losses and not knowing that Clayburn commands the men on the mountain top, orders to mountain to be mined. When Kathy discloses the truth to him but is almost too late. He allows Kathy to climb to the top and get Clayburn to surrender. But she is shot, and the ensuing delay is fatal.
