On April 30th 1954, a Finnish-American actress, showgirl and pin-up named Maila Nurmi sashayed down a dark corridor fogged with dry ice, stopped on cue and unleashed a bloodcurdling scream. She was sporting her best faux-Morticia Addams dress, vampy fingernails, long black hair and an imperious expression. After the introductory trance and shriek that began every episode of Kabc TV’s The Vampira Show, the host would recline on a skull-decorated Victorian couch and mockingly introduce one of any number of low-budget and no-budget horror films for her late-night television audience. Former child actress Shirley Temple has died at the age of 85. The Hollywood legend, who made her screen debut at the age of just three, died in her Californian home, surrounded by her family.
According to the IMDb, Temple’s last screen credit was in the 1960s in a television show named The Red Skelton Show, but she made her name in the 1930s appearing in the likes of Curly Top, Stowaway and a lead in Bright Eyes, singing ‘Good Ship Lollipop,’ which she is perhaps best known for.
Temple was, and still is the youngest person to ever win an Oscar. Shirley Temple, the child star phenomenon of the 1930s who went on to a career in international diplomacy, died Tuesday in California at age 85.
A statement from her family provided to news organizations said she died at home in Woodside, Calif., of natural causes. “She was surrounded by her family and caregivers,” the BBC quoted the statement as saying. “We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and… our beloved mother, grandmother [and] great-grandmother.”
