question of the day: What movie are you ashamed to admit you’ve never seen?

27 December 2010 7:36 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

I keep putting off posting this question because I’m so embarrassed to answer it myself, but it’s time to bite the bullet: What movie are you ashamed to admit you’ve never seen? I know there are some serious gaps in my film education, and when I look at, say, the AFI’s list of top 100 movies, I’m sorry to say that I haven’t seen too many of them: Sunset Boulevard The African Queen Chinatown The Grapes of Wrath The Maltese Falcon Yikes. Now that I’ve humiliated myself, it’s your turn... (If you have a suggestion for a Qotd, feel free to email me. Comic actor Tom Arnold recently spent some time with Lindsay during a stint and Betty Ford and said she's "a very good person who is a really nice gal and is doing very well." Now Arnold is giving details on Hugh Grant's 1995 oral encounter with Sunset Boulevard hooker Divine Brown, saying he knew Grant was headed for trouble that night because his behavior was so odd. "I asked him if he was Ok (because) he was drinking a lot that day... He said, 'I'm gonna go upstairs to my (hotel) room, watch some lesbian porn, »

"Somewhere" Director Sofia Coppola: "I enjoy extreme settings"

22 December 2010 11:59 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It wasn't quite homesickness, but director Sofia Coppola felt a yearning for Los Angeles when she wrote her latest film "Somewhere," opening in the U.S. Wednesday. After the over the top posh environs and Baroque/Roccoco palate that permeated her previous film, "Marie Antoinette," set in the trappings of the Palace of Versailles, Coppola traded iconic residences for the comparatively minimalist Chateau Marmont, an oasis right off Sunset Boulevard for La's »

Don't Stop Believin': the power ballad that refused to die

From Glee to The X Factor, Journey's Don't Stop Believin' became inescapable in 2010. Dorian Lynskey on the 30-year-old track that slowly burned its way into our consciousness

"Just a small town girl …"

When was the last time you heard Don't Stop Believin'? Was it on the radio or in the pub? At a festival or a wedding? Was it sung by Journey themselves, the cast of Glee, a fan on YouTube, a choir of schoolchildren or a drunk friend on a karaoke machine? Boxfresh pop songs such as Tinie Tempah's Pass Out might have a decent claim on being the sound of Britain in 2010 but nothing has wriggled its way into every corner of the culture quite like a slow-burning power ballad that's about to celebrate its 30th birthday.

Chasen Murderer's Secret Past

14 December 2010 9:06 PM, PST | The Daily Beast | See recent The Daily Beast news »

Harold Smith, who police say killed publicist Ronni Chasen in a botched robbery, was a native New Yorker, drug abuser-and fearless bicycle thief. Ann Louise Bardach reports on his dark past.

Last Wednesday, the Beverly Hills Police Department held a press conference outside its ode-to-God building, in a neighborhood ringed with Dr. Seuss palm trees, to render its verdict in the murder of publicist Ronni Chasen: Harold Martin Smith, 43, was a single gunman, acting alone, who killed Chasen in her black E350 Mercedes coupe in "a robbery gone bad." His getaway vehicle: a bicycle.

Somewhere Review

10 December 2010 3:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Sofia Coppola’s fourth feature finds her back on home soil in a tale of paternal love and redemption set around the social hub of the Hollywood elite.

Stephen Dorff (back from bit-part wilderness to fully-fledged leading man status) stars as a single, pampered Hollywood superstar named Johnny Marco and when we meet the hard-partying actor, he appears to be at a crossroads of sorts. Incapacitated by a broken arm (gained from a night on the tiles) he’s bored, tired-looking and going through the motions of living that wild Hollywood lifestyle – a world forever filled with booze, hotel bed-hopping and a level of nonchalance chain-smoking which would make Don Draper green with envy.

He’s forced to clean up his act and reassess the vacuous lifestyle he leads when his 11 year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning), the product of a past relationship, turns up unexpectedly one day and ends up as a semi-permanent hotel guest. »

Help Me Figure Out These 14 'Classic Screen Types' Offered by the New York Times

9 December 2010 9:24 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The following video comes courtesy of "The New York Times" from their "Fourteen Actors Acting: A Video Gallery of Classic Screen Types" project scored by Owen Pallett and directed by Solve Sundsbo. This came online yesterday, but as I looked through the various silent performances I couldn't make out just what "classic" screen types each was mimicking. So, as everyone and their mother posted the videos yesterday I was hoping someone would shed some light on each so I could pass the information on to you, but alas, no one that I've found has mentioned a single film in relation to each performance. I didn't even notice anyone mentioning how Tilda Swinton is obviously channeling Maria Falconetti's performance from The Passion of Joan of Arc or Jennifer Lawrence's obvious Janet Leigh in Psycho impression.

I can't help but be reminded of North by Northwest from Anthony Mackie's video, »

Police Reveal Suspected Chasen Killer

8 December 2010 8:02 PM, PST | The Daily Beast | See recent The Daily Beast news »

Police say the murder of Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen was "a robbery gone wrong" after evidence showed the gun used in the killing matched the gun that suspect Harold Smith used to commit suicide last week. As The Daily Beast's Annie Bardach reported in an exclusive story earlier this week, the crime is increasingly looking like a random act of violence, not the work of a professional hit man as many media reports had suggested.

The Ronni Chasen murder mystery took another stunning turn Wednesday when police announced that the gun used to shoot the Hollywood publicist was the same weapon that Harold Smith, the "person of interest" in the case, had used to kill himself with last week.

Terry Gilliam, the king in exile

3 December 2010 7:36 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The director of The Fisher King and Twelve Monkeys is in danger of becoming an unknown to future generations

Even before the prolonged gush of the awards season, there's been a lot of adulation in the air of late, with much of it directed at a pair of Britain's most battle-hardened film-makers. Mike Leigh has justly had his reputation burnished by Another Year; and even before the release of 127 Hours, the bouquets have been prepared for Danny Boyle. But perhaps we could spare a thought for another, currently less exalted grandee – Terry Gilliam, who recently celebrated his 70th birthday without much in the way of a surprise party from an industry that seems to be showing every sign of having forgotten about his very existence.

It's a strange situation for those of us for whom Gilliam has been a square-peg fixture in film culture as long as they remember watching »

"Americas's Most Wanted"'s John Walsh told the newspaper that a staff member from the show shared a tip from the public with the Beverly Hills Police Department, leading them to question Smith, who committed suicide during the inquiry on Wednesday. "We have been working closely with Beverly Hills," Walsh told the publication, explaining that the show recently asked viewers for any tips concerning the case that might help investigators. Chasen, well known in Hollywood entertainment circles, died after being shot numerous times in the chest while in her car.
