Fortune teller Arturo de Cordova tangles with Letitia Palma
12 May 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"In the Palm of Your Hand" is a classic film noir. A number of noirs have a man-woman conflict as a major feature. This occurs in "Out of the Past" and "Too Late for Tears". What distinguishes this conflict in "In the Palm of Your Hand" is its intensity. Most of the movie focuses on a battle of wits and cunning between Cordova and Palma. The outcome is in doubt. First one, then the other seems to have the upper hand.

The film goes deeply into the psychology of the fortune-teller, Cordova, as events leave their mark on him and he changes. Cordova, as an actor, is up to the challenge. So is Palma, who one moment is attractive and the next moment cold, calculating and treacherous.

There are remarkable sets. The director used both them and close-ups judiciously.

This is a suspenseful story with unpredictable turns and conclusion.

Cordova is happily married. He gets information from his beautician wife and uses it to tell fortunes. He latches on to Palma when he learns that her husband has died, leaving her millions. But she is no pushover to his insinuations and blackmail, although she makes one payoff. Cordova is playing a dangerous game, his wife feels. She warns him, but the lure of the money and the attractions of Palma make her warnings of no avail.
