Valentine Dyall solves the case of the missing heiress
26 July 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I liked this movie a great deal. It was atmospheric, occurring largely in a big old mansion. It held my attention all the way. The story maintained a good mystery despite having relatively few characters. Hugh Griffith did a great turn as a soft-spoken butler. Valentine Dyall's voice alone kept this going.

The story is told in flashback with Dyall dictating the memoir of the case to his secretary, Julia Lang. He humorously puts down her attempt at being a detective and at disobeying his orders that almost got her murdered.

The older man (Philip Leaver) who runs the mansion is wheelchair bound. He's imperious and giving his niece heiress (Jean Lodge) a hard time. She wants to run off and marry Peter Drury, a possible golddigger Leaver thinks. If she comes of age, she inherits the whole estate. She disappears. Julia Lang takes it upon herself to find out what happened to her acquaintance. But when a murder occurs, she realizes she's in way over her head and calls in Dyall. Lang pitches her somewhat comic part just right, a mixture of flightiness, intelligence, girlishness, and independent initiative. Drury is somewhat more than adequate as a penniless writer.

If Francis L. Sullivan had played the part that Leaver had, this film would have really been something. The part was made for him, and Leaver doesn't carry it off the way it should have been. The following year Sullivan was to do the classic noir "Night and the City". He's wheelchair bound and excellent in "Hell's Island".

This is a well-done if modest British mystery-detective story, and I recommend it for those who like these old films.
