Nostradamus could not have been more accurate . . .
oscaralbert3 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
. . . in his predictions for America's Future than Warner Bros. is with the animated short RIFF RAFFY DAFFY. Beleaguered Daffy Duck represents the down-trodden U.S. 99 Per Centers here, bilked out of house and home by the Capitalist Pig One Per Cent. Porky Pig stands in for American Law, aiding and abetting the One Per Center goal of amassing 99% of Our Wealth, while ordering the rest of us to just "M-m-m-m-ove along." The U.S. Supreme Court had not yet replaced Thomas Jefferson's "one person, one vote" precept with the "one dollar, one vote" dictum of that Court's "Citizens United" decision, so Warner Bros. felt that its animators MIGHT be able to turn back the tide of gluttonous greed threatening to swallow America whole by the mid-1900s. Therefore, Porky sports an authoritative-looking police jacket as he molests Daffy--BUT THE PIG ISN'T WEARING ANY PANTS!! Warner is asking the viewer to decide WHO is more credible: An American citizen just trying to keep warm in the winter, or a brutal billy-club swinging power abuser flashing his privates as brazenly as he favors the One Per Cent in their battle against Everyone Else?

This brief cartoon documents the fact that many if not most American dads . . .

. . . cannot distinguish their own children from wind-up toys. As the Porky Pig episode ends, Daffy Duck convinces himself that two mechanical ducklings are his Pride and Joy. Porky falls for this ploy--IF that's what it is--because he's nurturing a trio of robotic piglets himself! As the typical U.S. mom waits month after month for always tardy, late and overdue child support payments from their baby dads, the prevailing attitude among these latter malingering miscreants seems to be "out-of-sight, out of mind." It's as if these irresponsible breeders believe that their issue can live on thin air, like a cheap gizmo on a toy department shelf. Therefore, this animated short is bound to hit too close to home for millions of moms in the USA.

If we would just provide homeless shelters, these sorts of things wouldn't happen!
lee_eisenberg13 December 2008
Some of Daffy Duck's best roles were the ones in which he irks Porky Pig. One example is Arthur Davis's* "Riff Raffy Daffy". After cop Porky throws the homeless Daffy out of a city park one frigid night, the discouraged duck hunkers down in a department store display case. What follows has to be some of the most hilarious stuff that the Termite Terrace crowd ever portrayed!

Part of what I determined from this cartoon - actually, I already knew it but the cartoon strengthened my beliefs - is that if we would just provide homeless shelters, then these sorts of things wouldn't happen. I know that the Rush Limbaugh types like to claim that the poor and homeless drain our economy, but is there ANY reason to believe anything that the Rush Limbaugh types say?

OK, too much analysis. The point is that whenever Daffy and Porky co-star, we're in for something good, and that's definitely the case here. I predicted the elevator gag, but everything else was a real surprise, especially the trick at the end. Really funny.

*Arthur Davis took over Bob Clampett's animation unit after the latter left Warner Bros. He directed cartoons for about two years until lack of funds forced Warner Bros. to close the unit. Davis then returned to animating.

Daffy as homeless vagabond. (teeny-weensy little spoiler)
llltdesq9 October 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Porky should have avoided roles as a policeman-the only time it worked out favorably for him was in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He played a cop at least three times opposite Daffy, including here, and Daffy stole a march on him twice. The third time ended badly for them both. Not Porky's finest hours. Daffy's lot is a pathetic one and the viewer would be sympathetic were it not for the most heart-rending sight (at least for this viewer) ever painted on cels by the crew at Termite Terrace (above mentioned spoiler ahead):

Daffy cruelly dispossesses a gopher of his hole in the ground, with the thoroughness of a banker, reducing said gopher to tears. The sight of that poor gopher crying in the snow in the midst of his belongings, why it's downright pitiful and anyone who doesn't cry should go to work for the Internal Revenue Service (Inland Revenue to our friends across the Big Pond).

Great cartoon with gags worthy of the Brothers Marx. In fact, portions of this remind me of The Big Store. Well worth watching. Most recommended,

A Daffy and Porky Classic.
lukeneedssand29 June 2021
The setting and original score are definitely the highlights in this cartoon. The comedy is astoundingly hilarious, and will enormously entertain the likes of all audiences. Porky is a police officer a couple other times in the classic shorts, but this is the funniest one with his role. Daffy isn't forgotten either, while delivering his traditional (but borderline hilarious) comedy. The Animation is also quite good. Setting and Lighting are cozy as always, and the Original score (Like I said) is so awesome, I wish I had the whole thing on Apple Music.

10/10, NO PROBLEMS.

Hardly a riff raff of a cartoon at all, in fact it's great!
TheLittleSongbird20 August 2012
I may be biased as I am a huge Looney Tunes fan and especially of Daffy Duck. But I did love Riff Raffy Daffy. The elevator gag is a little predictable perhaps, everything else is right on target. Porky is at his best when playing it straight and he does here. For me, he is not one of the strongest cartoon characters in presence, especially when partnered with Daffy, but at the rapport is good with Daffy. Daffy however is as ever brilliant, a great mix of manic and cynical with great charisma and wit. Mel Blanc's voicing of these two characters is superb, a standard that I have come to expect from Blanc. The animation has detail and vibrancy, while the music adds so much to the fast paced and fun feel of the short and the sound effects likewise. The story is interesting and not routine, the dialogue is fresh and full of witty humour and the gags are imaginative, beautifully timed and have the funny impact they should. Despite the sense of fun, Riff Raffy Daffy also has a heart-wrenching moment, the image of the gopher in the snow crying will be guaranteed to resonate with you as it did with me. All in all, a great short. 9/10 Bethany Cox
