Superb hagiography of José de Salamanca by the great Neville.
20 November 2012 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

The film is a part of the biography of Joseph of Salamanca1st Marquis of Salamanca and Grandee of Spain (23 May 1811, Malaga - 21 January 1883, Madrid) was a Spanish nobleman, politician and businessman. He served as Finance Minister of Spain and Briefly as de facto prime minister in 1847.

Prominent During the reign of Isabella II, He was responsible for an extension to the city of Madrid, the Salamanca neighborhood of that city now bears his name. He had an adventurous life with many ups and downs. At one time he probably had the largest fortune in Spain. His associates included prominent Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies, queen mother and regent for the young Queen Isabella. As a businessman, he undertook many projects That shaped modern Spain: railways, construction of entire Neighborhoods, banking and Investments, at the same time, he was associated with no small amount of political and corporate corruption.

Given the hagiography way that Neville gives the film in all senses, makes another of his genre paintings, half imagined recreations of a Madrid idealized, pure and popular, this time covered in their classrooms, offices and ministries. It was filmed with more ease than usual in Neville, with a magnificent reconstruction era, and brilliantly dialogues, is high comedy Neville style than anything else, that is, where everything can be taken as a joke starting the tawdriness.

Therefore the best is in the brilliance of his dialogues and the parade of particular types like that great pair of loan sharks, which are straight out of comic vignettes of the Spanish magazine "La Codorniz". Excellent performance as "Salamanca" Beau most successful of those years, Alfredo Mayo, and magnificent presence and performance, as always, the great actress who was Conchita Montes, playing "María Buschental" banker's wife José de Buschental , she was courtly figure of Madrid and platonic lover of the protagonist throughout his life, at least life movie.
