Deserter wanted for robbery receives a widow's help

"Man on the Run" (1949) is a Britnoir, now available in a German print that looks reasonably good, a big improvement over past prints circulating in the secondary market. The noir atmosphere and photography are plentiful. Derek Farr plays a deserter, virtually an involuntary one, who was ground down by the system. After 4 years of war service, he was not allowed to extend a leave when his close family members died. Bitter over losing his business for this time while others avoided service, he deserted, one of many to do so. He's spotted in a pub by Kenneth More (as Moore) who attempts blackmail. Farr is about to pawn his revolver when two masked men hold up the store. A policeman dies, and a manhunt for Farr begins. He is taken in by war widow Joan Hopkins. So begins their saga.

The police procedural part of the story adds quite a lot of tension, even as the story becomes rather predictable.

The movie works quite well, although marred by a major story coincidence that it's pointless to reveal. Farr is suitably downbeat over his situation, and the movie alludes throughout to the harmful effects of the war on many people. It's refreshing that Hopkins quickly believes the evidently sincere Farr. In most stories like this, a woman in her position facing an intruder is suspicious for so long that the conflict begins to seem concocted. By going over to his side because of her own situation, we feel that the war is causing rather widespread emotional distress. More's part as a blackmailer contributes to this as do some other bits. The furtive nature of the movements of Farr and Hopkins, the "on the run" feeling, and especially the attempts by the two of them to restart their lives form a solid emotional core to this film that lifts it above an ordinary thriller.
