Storyline

A gang of ex-convicts pull and holdup in an office building and the night-watchman is killed. The leader of the gang is wounded and they take refuge in a lodge belonging to the leader's wife. An insurance investigator registers at the lodge, posing as a doctor, and he is forced to operate on the wounded gang-leader. He recovers but is later murdered by a deaf-mute that works at the lodge. In the gunfight that follows, the investigator and the slain man's wife succeed in capturing the gang. Written by Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

Gene Raymond, insurance investigator, poses as a doctor to locate a gang of thieves

Budd Boetticher working as Oscar directed this tight film noir running 66 minutes. The gang of thieves is realistic and not cookie cutter. There is the leader who is wounded but threatening. There is cold-blooded Ralf Harolde. There is a mercurial brute, one minute joking, the next minute demanding and sadistic. There is Martin Kosleck, very nervous and excitable and worried.

Gene Raymond, following a lead, has shown up at a lodge run by the gang leader's unhappy wife, Noreen Nash, who has found she made a bad match. He's mistaken for a doctor and uses that cover. The gang shows up and he follows through posing as doctor. Meanwhile he's fallen for Noreen.

There is one other grotesque in the cast, and that's the tall and hulking Gene Evans. Devoted to Noreen, he never speaks. He's made up with a continuous eyebrow, making him look a bit like a Frankenstein in a bulky wool sweater.

Raymond has a ticklish scene in which he must remove a bullet from the wounded man's shoulder. The gang squabbles, mortally. The sheriff shows up unexpectedly. The gang decides it must leave. Evans takes an unexpected initiative. Whew! The pressure is on Gene Raymond and Noreen.

Most of the story is inside the lodge in this low-budget entry. Most of it is character development and interactions in a tense manner.

The movie is probably a 6, but I'm noir-biased and this one is rare, so I give it a 7. I got it only through a trade, and the print is good, not great, but not even close to bad.
