Are the paintings real or fakes?
26 December 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

John Calvert is The Falcon in this low-budget second feature entry. It chugs along pretty good. What keeps it going is the off-center, off-balance role that Calvert plays. Ambiguity is the one-word summary. He manages to infiltrate the business of an art dealer (Catherine Craig). Behind this is a tale of two paintings that may or may not be fakes. But they were heavily insured some time back and Lyle Talbot's insurance company paid off on their theft. The owner wants the paintings, however, even though he doesn't want to repay the proceeds if they're recovered. More ambiguity. The dealer Craig seems both annoyed to have Calvert around but also attracted to him and anxious to recover the two paintings and sell them as a pair. Ambiguity can become confusion, but somehow the story pulls us in. There's a buyer in the wings, Jack Reitzen, who's not above murder. There's an artist in Italy, Peter Brocco, who claims that he painted these masterpieces but they're so good that no one can tell.

I found it enjoyable because it has a certain charm and lightness to it, plus that ambiguity. It's not because it looks good, has production values or is well-acted. It's simply passable on those dimensions.
