One of the three PRC Philo Vance features which ended the on screen series in 1947(the other two starring Alan Curtis),this casts frequent villain William Wright,whom I've seen in 2 Boston Blackies,as Vance who not only gets awakened in the middle of the night to solve a murder but hears the caller get shot before he even hangs up!The very low budget occasionally calls attention to itself though the mystery is not bad;some viewers may correctly guess the killer's identity but there's more here than meets the eye.Unlike Alan Curtis,William Wright was not a well known actor by any means(perhaps due to his untimely death from cancer in 1949) and does not excel in his only stint as Vance,but I would still recommend it for fans of the numerous Philo Vance entries dating back to 1929,initially starring William Powell. I would not rate these three PRC films very highly,but the three Film Classic "Falcon" features from 1948-49 with John Calvert I enjoyed rather more.
