His girl friend Lois Walter (Teala Loring) , against the wishes of her guardian, Jim Grosset (Charles Arnt), assists Tom and his police-officer brother-in-law Mac McLane (Robert Armstrong) in trying to clear Tom of a possible murder charge. Tom only recalls meeting a man in a bar and going to a party. Tom and Mac find the man, Joe (Elisha Cook Jr.), who takes them to the party scene, the apartment of the Sindells, where they find the body of a murdered girl in the apartment above. The police pick up Mac, while Tom trails Marie (Virginia Dale and Mike (Jack Overman). Joe is murdered for leading Tom to the scene of the crime, and Marie, who had been hired by the killer to get Tom at the apartment when the crime was committed, is choked to death. Tom, following the killer of Marie, ... Written by Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>

Leo Penn awakes in a fog and in a frame-up
23 August 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Fall Guy" used to be one of those rare noirs available only in quite bad prints. Now it's out in an excellent print from Warner Archive.

The movie stars Leo Penn as a man caught in an unusual frame-up for murder. He was drugged and can't immediately recollect what happened. He induces his detective brother-in-law, Robert Armstrong, to help him fill in the blanks. The police (mainly Douglas Fowley) are after them both. Penn's girl friend, Teala Loring, pitches in. Her uncle-guardian is Charles Arndt. Penn remembers a party and a blonde singer, Virginia Dale. Noir regular Elisha Cook Jr. brought him to the party.

The Cornell Woolrich story "Cocaine" is really a separate star here, imparting that disorienting feeling to his noir entries. One common male-female argument leads to a few drinks and, natural as these things are, the hero is plunged into a world that's out of kilter and off balance because behind the scenes there is another unknown presence.

Monogram produced this. This movie is quite watchable. For the most part, the film makers succeeded in doing quite a lot with relatively little. In fact, there are some very nice noir staging and photographic touches along the way. Penn is cast well as a kind of everyman and average guy confused and dazed by what happened to him. Armstrong provides the balancing force and gusto. Elisha Cook livens things up too as does Dale.
