Thankyou Marie Louise and Members of The Academy, 5 October 2005
Author: ptb-8 from Australia

This "infamous" short film was made specifically for the Academy to award an Oscar to Monogram Pictures-Allied Artists. The 1945 gangster blockbuster DILLINGER was the rightful winner of the 1946 'best original screenplay' Oscar but the outrageous stand-over tactics employed by MGM Paramount and Warner Bros over the huge success of DILLINGER saw the Academy cave in and steer the award to the unseen Swiss movie MARIE LOUISE. So silently outraged at this appalling gagging behavior the Academy righted this wrong as best they could by seeing Monogram release a short Swiss film (huh?) that hey...wins an Oscar! Yes, in a secret deal CLIMBING THE MATTERHORN was created possibly from second unit footage shot by Swiss Cinematographer Richard Angst (or is that name a joke too?) and awarded an Academy Award so that Monogram-AA got an Oscar one way or another for being robbed at the1946 Academy Awards presentation. The title and location of this short is an in-joke on this scandal. Read the comments references in the IMDb for DILLINGER and MARIE LOUISE for the full story. My suspicion is that this short was created from leftover or extra footage from the Monogram Picture of 1947 called HIGH CONQUEST. Colour footage was shot by Swiss cinematographer Richard Angst for 'both' HIGH CONQUEST and CLIMBING THE MATTERHORN; in fact one film is a feature of the other. Why not use the real outdoor footage bought in from Switzerland, create one studio film and then make a short that conveniently wins the sought-after Oscar? HIGH CONQUEST is about some guy scared of "climbing the Matterhorn"! Studio bound drama with some real footage shot by the Swiss that gets conveniently recycled into something the Academy can award an Oscar to. Now I geddit.
