- Shiftless playboy Tom Collier lives to jump from party to party--until he meets photographer Christie Sage. Through Christie, Tom takes over the ownership of The Bantam, a liberal magazine which opposes everything his family represents. As Tom and Christie's relationship deepens, love blooms and he proposes to her. Realizing that she could never fit in with Tom's social circle, Christie says no, a decision she later regrets. But Tom isn't left alone for long--scheming gold-digger Cecelia Henry wastes no time in catching Tom on the rebound and forcing him into a disastrous marriage.—Daniel Bubbeo
- With an inheritance from his grandmother, independently wealthy Tom Collier III lives a carefree and somewhat eccentric life in a country mansion in Glen Haven, CT, that life in direct opposition to his more conservative father. It includes surrounding himself with equally eccentric people, such as his rough-around-the-edges ex-bouncer butler Pat Regan, who he treats more as a friend and drinking buddy than a servant. At what was supposed to be his surprise thirty-second birthday party, which ends up being a surprise to everyone else in attendance, Tom meets two women: photographer Christie Sage who has been assigned to cover the party for the liberal Bantam Magazine, and gold-digger Cecelia Henry, crashing the party the first step in her goal of becoming Mrs. Tom Collier III solely for the money and what she can do with it to further her desired life. Despite falling in love with Christie in having bought Bantam - in further opposition to his father - and establishing himself as part of its liberally minded editorial unit, Tom ends up marrying Cecelia out of circumstance, including the fact that Christie could not see herself living a moneyed life which she feared if she ended up falling for Tom. The question then becomes what happens to this trio when Christie realizes that she truly does love Tom and can see that someone like Cecelia as his wife will ruin what is good about him.—Huggo
