Pleasant turn of the century musical set in NYC's Bowery, 13 February 2001
4/10

This is a pleasant little trifle from Monogram, centering on turn of the century NYC's Bowery. In fact it should have been called "THE BOWERY" for calling it SUNBONNET SUE is misleading. This is not the old operetta of that title, the song is merely one sung by leading lady, Gale Storm. George Cleveland gives one of his best performances as Casey, a Tavern Owner, whose daughter, Sue, performs there. Sue's aunt is determined to raise her out of that shameless state and bring her up in wealth as a young woman ought (funny, she didn't think of it for about 23 years of Sue's life thus far). In order to keep her aunt from shutting her father's saloon down, she goes to live with her. The predictable happens with Sue eventually winning her love and returning to the Bowery. The scoring was nominated for an Oscar but is rather mediocre and undeserving in my opinion. Gale Storm is her usual perky, bright and bouncy self - much talent here kept under a cabbage leaf and given mediocre projects for all of her film career - she was to hit her stride on tv. This is not top quality film making but is pleasant enough and a must see for Storm fans - a rare film.
