Sierra of Teruel is a document of fiction magnificent on the Spanish Civil War.
26 July 2010 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

The argument of the film is based on a fragment of the novel L'Espoir, of own director Malraux. "Sierra of Teruel" tells the story of a squadron of republican army formed in large part by pilots of the International Brigades, which has as its mission fly a bridge to break the siege "national" in the Battle of Teruel.

"Sierra of Teruel" has been considered a clandestine Film. It began to roll in the republican Spain in 1938, and unfinished of filmed, the team had to go into exile in France in 1939, when the troops of the general Franco entered in Catalonia. In France completed mount, but when the Nazis entered there, destroyed the original negatives. Despite this, was saved a copy to which it was amputated fragments of the end, were included new placards between sequences and be manipulated the titles of credit.

"Sierra of Teruel", is a film mistreated at the time due to adverse political situation in Spain and Europe, premiered late, cut, even he changed the title by "Espoir" in order to call like the successful novel of A. Malraux, with clear for commercial purposes.

Despite this, "Sierra of Teruel" is considered one of the best movies on the Spanish Civil War of all time, with rave reviews at world level. Although became premiered in the US in 1947 and won a prize Louis Delluc in 1945, it was not until the 1965 when it was rediscovered by the public film, projected in the Festival of Venice in 1965.

Another of the great successes is the approximation to the acquired, gender that do not develop fully until the 1948, in Italy, so it can be considered a "Sierra of Teruel" as a forerunner of the genre. The movie uses numerous interpreters not actors, people of the peoples of Teruel, giving a greater documentary to the film, as well as actors who played to perfection to the peasants and workers of Aragón, giving it a realistic way to the story narrated.
