This drama centers on a Red Army officer (Paul Muni), a Russian woman (Lisa Elenko), and seven German soldiers who have been trapped in the ruined cellar of a bombed out factory in a German-controlled town. While waiting for someone to rescue them, the two Russians try to keep the Germans away. Eventually the Russian officer begins toying with a German officer, and vice versa, as both seek to extract information from the other. The Russian lets on that his troops are planning to construct a tunnel beneath the river. The woman is appalled at this betrayal of information, but her companion reassures her that he can kill the enemy before they have time to share that information, but first they need to get rescued. As time slowly passes, the tension increases, especially when the Soviet begins to fall asleep. The film was made during the brief period after WW II when Russia and the U.S. were allies and the political overtones of the film were unintentional. Later, with the advent of the ... Written by

I beg to differ with those that say that this movie will only be shown on TCM. I saw it years ago on either a PBS station or on ACM. I have had TCM for less than 2-3 months and never had it before. TCM did show another one of Paul Muni's movies named "Angel on my Shoulder" that he did just after this movie that I have also viewed before. I came just to vote on the three films that Paul Muni was in that I have viewed.
This movie starts with Alexi Kulkov (played by Paul Muni) and one of the Russian partisans named Lisa Elenko (played by Margueritte Chapman) seeking shelter in a building only to have the building shelled. They are trapped with seven Germans, one of which is an officer who has somehow got other clothes so you don't know his real rank.
Most of the action is revealed supposedly with just one flashlight. With old incandescent bulbs that is a stretch. All I know is that it couldn't possibly last that long. Despite Alexi's low rank he plays mind games with the Germans and they with him. Rather than just being the enemy they all show different personalities. Through the battle of wits Alexi learns that one of them is an officer. The battle of minds and wits occupies the whole movie. When Alexi says that Russian tanks will cross by going on top of the water the German officer reveals he is not just an ordinary soldier by calling him mad.
Who comes first to rescue them? The Russians or the Germans? You will have to watch the movie to find that out.
