Trivia

The statue of the Maltese Falcon is clearly displayed as an ornament on the top of the wooden filing cabinet in Det. Lt. Egan's office when Richard visits. A few years earlier, Bogart and Greenstreet has appear in the movie about this statue, by the same name. No reference to it in the dialogue is made. See more »

Goofs

When Richard sees the empty apartment, the owner tells him that the sink has a double draining board, yet there is no sink. Furthermore, it could not even be in the obscured alcove or it would be obscuring the light from the window on the wall. See more »

Quotes

Kathryn Mason: You're in love with her aren't you? I thought so. Well what're you going to do about it?
Richard Mason: How can I do anything about it? I haven't said anything to her and I don't intend to. When I married you, your sister was jusjt a kid. Now she's grown up and I happen to find myself in love with her. Just one of those things that can't be helped.
Kathryn Mason: I suppose you'd like me to step out of the picture, well I'll never do that.
Richard Mason: I know that.
Kathryn Mason: As though you should try to leave me because she'd never marry you anyway...

impact of conflict
24 December 2009 | by (Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico) – See all my reviews

This is one of Bogart's best movies. He could go either to hard bitten private detective Sam Spade or to paranoid types like the role he plays in this movie or what he did in Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Like most Hollywood movies, murder seems a bit unrealistic given the characters as they are written out and portrayed. But get by the murder and the contrived plot that follows, Bogart still is nothing less than fantastic in this movie. Alexis Smith's part as his wife's younger sister is another reason not to throw this film in as a minor and forgettable Bogart effort. Leave it to director Curtis Bernhardt, who was known for making "women"s films, to make a film that explores so well a man's infatuation and insecurity.
