Storyline

Hammond, owner of the town's stagecoach line and a leading citizen, is opposed to Idaho becoming a state, and kills Randolph Meredith, owner of the town's newspaper, for endorsing it. Meredith's sister Barbara, expert with a bullwhip and pistol, dons a black costume and mask and becomes "The Black Whip", dealing a blow to Hammond and his gang each time they perform some heinous act in their efforts to keep the town, and their power over it, unchanged. Aided by government agent Vic Gordon, Barbara confronts Hammond in a final showdown just as the town votes on whether or not to accept statehood. Written by Doug Sederberg <vornoff@sonic.net>

Trivia

Although this serial carries the credit "based on characters created by Johnston McCulley", none of the Zorro characters appears in this film. It was released as a Zorro film apparently so that the studio could be sure the moviegoers would come to watch the serial. Also, George J. Lewis, who plays the male hero, had usually played villainous roles to the moment. He will later play the role of Zorro/Diego's father, Don Alejandro de la Vega in the defining TV show Zorro (1957). Zorro in Idaho?
6 April 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I have no idea how Zorro got to Idaho. Every Zorro fan knows that he never left California. That's not the only thing different about this film - Zorro is a woman! ¡Ay, caramba! Before television, you went to the theater to see "episodes" There were many serials during the 30's and 40's, with a brief revival in the 50's. Zorro was among them. Zorro Rides Again (1937) with John Carroll as the disguised, legendary 19th century title character, the 12-chapter Zorro's Fighting Legion (1939), this series, Zorro's Black Whip (1944), Son of Zorro (1947), and Ghost of Zorro (1949) with Clayton Moore in his first masked-western-hero role.

Linda Stirling, who plays The Black Whip, was a leading lady of the era and does a great job here in keeping alive the legend of Zorro, even if the setting is far from home.
