Don Barry acquits himself quite well as star and cowboy hero of this Republic Pictures western Outlaws Of Santa Fe. Barry's starts out as an outlaw but then takes the vacant job of Marshal of Santa Fe and does a good job of bringing a group of cattle rustlers to justice. Barry's got a personal stake in this. He finds out that the outlaw who raised him was not his real father. His real father was the Marshal of Santa Fe and shot down by Herbert Heyes leader of the current group of outlaws that he's dealing with.

Barry did well in his western career on both sides of the law. As often as not he would be a villain opposing such folks as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. I recall him being an outlaw in one of John Wayne's Three Mesquiteer films.

Faring not so well is Wally Vernon. Borrowed from RKO Vernon was at this time usually paired with Alan Carney as a comedy team. A western sidekick this man was definitely not cut out for.

Barry was an under-appreciated actor who played both sides of the law in the old west rather well. Ignore Vernon and enjoy the rest of the film.
