H. Bruce Humberstone,
Long before the computer age, Fox understood the find and replace key- they churned out indistinguishable musicals about turn of the century performers and composers that basically had a dumb romantic story line having nothing whatever to do with the events of the subject's life. This is one of the weakest (LILLIAN RUSSELL wins the award for the dullest). There is practically no story at all. Boy sees girl, boy loses girl, boy becomes success, boy finds girl. What is amazing is the amount of money and talent Fox spent on this trifle. Although it only got one Oscar nom (Scoring) deservedly, it certainly deserved others in the categories of Art Direction, Sound and Costumes Design (sadly, the latter category had not yet been invented in 1944). It's entertaining and colorful (beautiful Technicolor design)but there's nothing to it at all. One wonders if one has indeed seen the film after it is over - it is so effervescent, as in fizz.
