Storyline

In 1940 Sally Maitland is forced to leave England, ostracised as a Nazi sympathiser by everyone including her well-to-do family. On the ship to Halifax, Canada, she is courted by Polish aristocrat Jan Orloch and by awkward British navel intelligence officer Jimmy Garrick. She shows herself somewhat more amenable to Orloch's advances, and agrees to meet his mother in Halifax. Once there however, it becomes clear no-one is really who they say they are. Trivia

Cyril Fletcher recites one of his Odd Odes in cabaret (as he genuinely did during WWII), ending with the knowing comment: "Was her journey really necessary?" As well as being a sly dig at Sally, this alludes to the contemporary posters produced by the Railway Executive Committee which urged the public not to make unnecessary use of the railways. Goofs

At the end Garrick mentions that the cigarette case with the swastika inside saved Sally's life when she was shot by the Nazi Orlock. However the cigarette case does not appear to be damaged. See more »

Crazy Credits

The MPPDA seal appears on the opening RKO Radio logo on the American print instead of its usual place in the credits. See more »

Mediocre WW II story
14 May 2000 | by (West Virginia) – See all my reviews

This film is pretty typical of the WW II spy genre. Performances are okay but nothing special. Most of the story takes place in Canada, where the RCMP are responsible for catching enemy agents. The entire scenario is very easy to figure out so there are no real surprises as the various characters show their true loyalties. The ending is neatly wrapped up in a satisfying manner.
