1943's "What We Are Fighting For" was the second of Lon Chaney's two wartime one reel shorts at Universal (following 1942's "Keeping Fit," both scripted by Paul Huston), receiving top billing over a small cast of five players. Samuel S. Hinds features as an air raid warden who demonstrates to Bill Wallace (Chaney) the importance of safety under darkness, while neighbor Osa Massen talks about her terrible experiences in Nazi Germany, where a knock on the door meant death for those who dared open. Robert Paige briefly appears as Massen's doomed husband, while Ludwig Stossel provides the voice of the German Underground, risking their lives in opposition to Hitler. Director Erle C. Kenton also worked with Chaney on "North to the Klondike," "The Ghost of Frankenstein," "House of Frankenstein," and "House of Dracula."
