Thundering Trails (1943)
[Sam Brooke is shot during a hold-up]
Johnny Brooke, Stony's brother: Where'd they get you, Dad?
Captain Sam Brooke, Stony's father: Where they have to get most Rangers - in the back!
[The Three Mesquiteers hear gunfire]
Stony Brooke: That must be the party we were invited to!
[The ex-Rangers see a sign reading "Monroe County Police - John Brooke, Captain Commanding" over their old office]
Tucson Smith: They moved in pretty fast, didn't they?
Stony Brooke: Looks like they're giving Johnny featured billing.
[The Mesquiteers ride to Ben Walker's ranch to urge him not to pay protection money]
Judge Morgan: Looks like that three-man jury is going to give us a bad verdict.
Mollison: Want me to handle the case, Judge?
Judge Morgan: Yes - it does need special handling. In this case, we'll overrule the usual procedure. Ben Walker is going to be raided before he refuses.
Mollison: I ain't particular - before or after!
[The Mesquiteers, not knowing Walker has been bushwhacked, wait in jail for him to clear them of robbery charges]
Stony Brooke: Has Walker shown up yet?
Jailer: Nope. I told you I'd let you know the minute he does.
Lullaby Joslin: He sure picked a good time to play hide-and-go-seek.
[Deputy Sheriff Cantrell accuses the Mesquiteers of murdering Walker to cover-up the stagecoach robbery]
Lullaby Joslin: That figuring just about leaves us out on a limb.
Stony Brooke: Yeah - and dangling from ropes!
[with the help of the jailer's pet crow, the Three Mesquiteers escape]
Jailer: Where'd they go?
Eight Ball, a crow: They went that-a-way, Sheriff!
[examining chewed wood found where the murderer waited for Walker]
Lullaby Joslin: Fellows, I got it - all we got to do is find the termite who whittles his own toothpicks.
