We’ve know for quite some time now that the upcoming The Mummy would be the kick-off of Universal Pictures ‘Dark Universe’, a shared universe that will bring together all their classic monsters under one umbrella. We’re talking The Mummy, Dracula (Dracula Untold was said to be the start of this universe, but after it’s lacklustre box office haul, expect that to get a reboot), Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll, Phantom of the Opera, The Invisible Man, and many more. With the Mummy just around the corner (June 9th to be specific), the studio has officially announced Dark Universe with a pretty nifty video that highlights the storied history of these monsters on the big screen. In Angels of Music, Kim Newman takes us into the murky underworld of the Paris, with the focal point the Paris Opera House. At the start, it almost feels like a “what if” the Phantom of the Opera ran his own agency of spies? The Phantom’s spies all happen to be famous women from fiction. This book is a compilation of short stories showing the Opera Ghost’s ties to different Angels and how they came to keep France safe from numerous threats.
Reminiscent of the TV show Charlie’s Angels; these Angels, also never really hang out with the Phantom, instead they deal with his agent, The Persian, and communicate with the Phantom via mirrors and messages. This is a fun romp through literary history importing many characters you may not have previously thought would fit into this world. »

Director Gore Verbinski has crafted quite an interesting career. After striking genre gold with the remake of the Japanese horror film Ringu, orchestrating one of Disney’s most successful franchises with Pirates of the Caribbean, and continuing his collaboration with Johnny Depp on the animated film Rango and the reboot of The Lone Ranger, Verbinski was poised to do whatever he wanted to do with his next film, and it doesn’t take long to realize this quality in the director’s new film, A Cure for Wellness.

“Deadpool,” starring Ryan Reynolds as a debauched comic-book superhero/assassin who’s like Spider-Man crossed with the Phantom of the Opera crossed with Jim Carrey, is a movie the whole world was waiting for without knowing it: a Marvel franchise caper that runs on drop-dead attitude. In the opening credits, the camera glides through a freeze-framed car crash (the men in the vehicle are at each other’s throats, and maybe a few other body parts), the whole suspended orgy of destruction set to the mocking romantic strains of “Angel of the Morning.”
The credits then proceed to thumb their nose at 1) Reynolds’ Sexiest Man Alive cover for People magazine; 2) the filmmaker, Tim Miller, whose credit reads “Directed by an Overpaid Tool”; and the entire superhero genre.
