Storyline

In the 8th (and last) entry in the Scott R. Dunlap-produced "Rough Riders" series for Monogram, the town of Gold Creek is in turmoil due to the hi-jacking of gold. Newspaper editor Rufus Tood is going to publish the fact that a dying miner accused Rand and Ludlow of being his attackers. John Corbett, the town's leading citizen and Todd's supposed friend, but in reality the man behind the gang, has Todd's presses wrecked. The latter sends for U.S. Marshal Buck Roberts, who stops a holdup of miner Ray Mason, carrying gold in a wagon, and brings the wounded Ray to town and secretes the wagon. Marshals Tim McCall, posing as a preacher, and Sandy Hopkins, posing as an undertaker, have also arrived in town. The coffins Sandy brings contain a new printing press for Todd. With the aid of his daughter Julie, Todd puts out an edition naming Rand and Ludlow as crooks and demanding the name of the man behind the crimes. END OF THE LINE FOR A PLEASURABLE SERIES OF FILMS.
4 December 2004 | by (Mountain Mesa, California) – See all my reviews

The last entry of Monogram Picture Corporation's "Rough Riders" series of eight films, shot at the "Monogram Ranch" in northern Los Angeles County's Placeritas Canyon, this work is a cut below the series norm, not helped by careless direction and editing, unconvincing stuntwork, and some fluffed lines (notably by Jack Daley), but whenever the three principals are on the screen - Buck Jones as Buck Roberts, Tim McCoy as Tim McCall, with Raymond Hatton as Sandy Hopkins - all playing Federal Marshals called upon to aid citizens of a town (Gold Creek, Nevada) infested with a criminal band, the production offers a good deal to enjoy as the trio of stalwarts relies upon its customary guile, cunning and use of disguise to overcome the forces of evil, here led by veteran blackguards of the Western genre Roy Barcroft and dour Harry Woods.
