Glossy earnest combination of ultra-romance and patriotic fervor
15 December 2000 | by (Putney, VT) – See all my reviews

THIS ABOVE ALL is somewhat of a variation on MRS. MINIVER, with which it was in competition in 1942. The screenplay is quite literate and full of observations and ideas, both positive and negative, about such topics as the British aristocracy, patriotism, and desertion. As such it deserved but did not obtain an Oscar Nom - equally affecting was Alfred Newman's dramatic score, which also deserved but did not get an Oscar nod. The film did win an Oscar for its varied Art Direction (interiors of aristocratic homes, barracks, hillsides, vast restaurants, country inns, bomb-devastated city streets, hospitals), which was well deserved. Also deserved was its nom for Cinematography, beautifully lit and composed. The additional Oscar nods for Sound and Editing were not deserved - competent job but nothing outstanding here.

The onscreen chemistry between Power and Fontaine is wonderfully palpable - they give two of their very best performances, especially Fontaine, who is radiant. It is an ultra-romantic film as well as being deadly serious about pacifism, desertion and corruption and balances these qualities well to constantly interest and entertain its audiences. An excellent film in every way - it's a surprise that it is not on video and never has been. Also that few know of it. Seek it out on the Fox Movie Channel. Very worth a watch.
