Roxie Hart (1942) - News Poster

Theatre Review: Chicago (UK Tour)

Chicago review: Come and see how the prettiest women ever charged with murder get free for an evening of fabulous entertainment.

Chicago review by Katey Thompson.

This is an evening full of music, dancing and singing. Chicago is based true events that happened in Chicago in the 1920’s and is based on the play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins. It is about two vaudeville acts who are being tried for murder, with lyrics and music by John Kander and Fred Ebb.

Roxie Hart is brilliantly performed by Hayley Tamaddon (of Emmerdale and Coronation Street fame) a night club singer who shoots her lover whilst declaring undying love for her husband Amos. Neil Ditt portrays this non-descript man with excellent pathos and humour, especially when he performs the classic Mister Cellophane. Velma Kelly, a double murderess is depicted brilliantly by Sophie Carmen-Jones. Whilst in prison Roxie steals Velma Kelly’s place

Find Your Jesus, Find Your Kubrick: Lady Gaga as Auteur

For a while, Lady Gaga was one of the most fascinating music stars that had come in a while, primarily because of her unapologetic bombast. Too often, though, she may have been written off as “weird”, from her odd fashion decisions, her performance art appearances on TV, and, of course, her music videos. Gaga, née Stefani Germanotta, through her strange videos presents a vision, often of powerful women and the subversion of fame, through each of her music videos. Sometimes straddling the line between film and music video, Lady Gaga, though not always the director of these videos, is always the auteur behind them.

Lady Gaga’s early music videos are nothing if not promotional material, with “LoveGame” and “Poker Face” being, for the most part, entirely generic within the context of her career. It was not perhaps until she employed the use of music video director Jonas Åkerlund that

Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones put on the razzle-dazzle in director/choreographer Rob Marshall's Oscar-winning adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. After killing her no-good husband, Roxie Hart (Zellweger) is transformed into a national celebrity by the slickest lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere). But Roxie's rise doesn't sit well with her fellow jailbird and Flynn's most famous client, the scheming Velma Kelly (Oscar-winner Zeta-Jones).

Jimmy Fallon Says Goodbye to 'Late Night' With Help From the Muppets

Jimmy Fallon Says Goodbye to 'Late Night' With Help From the Muppets
After 969 episodes, 10,000 monologue jokes and one on-camera upchuck by Questlove, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon had no shortage of material to reflect upon during its final episode. Yet last night, its happy host summed up the entire show’s run succinctly with one Frankensteined über-joke: "Joe Biden needed Obamacare after Anthony Weiner texted Justin Bieber a picture of Chris Christie dating a Kardashian on the Jersey Shore."

6 Keys to Jimmy Fallon's 'Tonight Show': Timberlake (And Fun Insanity)

We would’ve added "on Friday" to that, but hey – that’s

Birgitte Sørensen: power player

Best known for her role in Danish drama Borgen, Birgitte Sørensen is about to take to the British stage in Coriolanus. She tells Mark Lawson about doing Shakespeare by Skype and bowing out of a TV phenomenon

Until now, actors who fancied working overseas generally had to fly in for auditions. Technology, though, has eased this actor traffic. Birgitte Hjort Sørensen – who plays the Danish journalist Katrine in Borgen, the best-loved political drama since The West Wing – was interviewed for her English Shakespearean debut over Skype. Between laptops in London and Copenhagen, Josie Rourke, artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse, offered Sørensen the role of Virgilia, the title character's wife, in Coriolanus.

"I had to think about it because, text-wise, it isn't the biggest part," says 31-year-old Sørensen. "And my agent said, 'I'm not sure it's big enough for you.' But I am honoured to be doing Shakespeare in London and,

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen: 'People in Britain have really taken to Borgen's strong female leads'

Her crusading reporter Katrine Fonsmark in Borgen is ambitious, hardworking, exercises too much, eats too little. "Which is certainly not the case for me," says Birgitte Hjort Sørensen

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen is already sitting in a booth at the back of a Japanese restaurant when I arrive for our lunch in Mayfair. It was her choice of venue and I'd assumed it was because sushi is the preferred diet of calorie-conscious actresses on perpetual detox.

But I notice Sørensen, 31, already has a glass of champagne in front of her and a twinkle in her eye. Another glass is immediately produced by a solicitous waiter. We clink and each take a swig.

It rapidly becomes clear that we are going to get along.

Within a few minutes, the Danish actress has told me that she loves London, because "I like the structure – I like knowing that you have to stand on

True Oscar Stories: Ann Reinking

Today is Ann Reinking's 64th birthday so do some impossibly precise Fosse moves tonight whereever you are in her honor #andallthatjazz

When I tweeted that this morning the internet saw fit to remind me of her big Oscar moment performing Phil Collins' Against All Odds (1984) and though it was legendarily awful I personally have nothing but fond memories of Reinking from Annie (1982) and Micki & Maude (1984) and her foxy Roxie Hart (pre-movie version). Plus, of course, All That Jazz (1979) which would have been a better Oscar moment had they saw fit to nominate her for Best Supporting Actress that year.

I have only very vague memories of the 1984 Oscars (only my second ? time watching as a kid) and YouTube doesn't help since her Oscar night performance has never been online to my knowledge though I did discover some time-capsule La Times items about that moment and this oddity from

Stanley Kubrick's List of Top Ten Films of All-Time Up To 1963

Any time a top ten list is made nowadays it is typically made by movie bloggers born in the late '70s / early '80s and therefore the span of time it covers is frequently limited to just a few years before their birth to modern day. As a result many great films are forgotten simply because it's damn near impossible to see everything. Thankfully, there are others out there to encourage us to see films before our time and expand our cinematic knowledge. Just yesterday I posted Spike Lee's list of 87 Essential Films (see that here) and I've always pointed out and referenced Roger Ebert's list of Great Movies, which you can see in its entirety right here. If you haven't seen these films, add them to a spreadsheet of your own and get to work as today I have ten more for you to consider. Born

Cast of Last Musical to Win Best Picture Academy Award to Be Reunited at 85th Academy Awards Ceremony

Zellweger, Gere, Zeta-Jones, and Latifah: ten years later, Chicago cast to be reunited at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah, Renée Zellweger, and Richard Gere, who starred in director Rob Marshall's 2003 Best Picture Oscar winner Chicago, will join forces once again -- but as presenters at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony next February 24. Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced the latest additions earlier today. (Pictured above: Zellweger, Gere doing a dance number in Chicago.) Remember that the 2013 ceremony is supposed to revolve around a Hollywood Musical theme, and that a decade ago Chicago became the last musical to win the Academy's Best Picture accolade. And here's a curious coincidence: It has also been a whole decade since a Directors Guild of America Award winner failed to also win the Academy Award in the Best Director category -- something that is bound to take
