Violence & Gore

  • A brief fight between a yeoman farmer and the local bailiff with two minions, when the farmer refuses to go into serfdom. The farmer shoots one of the minions in the shoulder with his flintlock rifle (non-bloody) and beats the other with his fists. He then throws his belt-axe at the bailiff, who barely escapes unscathed, before retreating from the house.
  • A tavern brawl occurs in which the executioner, after being insulted, cuts a farmer in the face, in a failed attempt at slicing off his ear. Shortly afterwards the executioner stabs a thief to death, when the latter tries to intervene. This is a fairly intense scene, especially for a 1940's movie, but there is only a miniscule amount of blood shown.
