Henry Aldrich played by Jimmy Lydon and his best friend Dizzy Stevens
by Charles Smith return in this fine film of comedy and family love. Henry
and Dizzy are with some girls in the lake area when Henry does what he does
"best" and sinks the boat. The boat owner and his horrible son played by
Carl "alfalfa" Switzer demand repayment for a new boat or jail for Henry.
Mr Aldrich is approached by Henry with the idea of a father/son project of
building a new boat. But the project that Mr Aldrich wants is only a kite.
So Henry enters a father/son outing of contests at the park to win a cash
prize. Trouble is that Mr Aldrich doesn't have time for his son so Henry
finds a substitute father. Mr Aldrich finds this out and learns that time
with his son is more important than anything else.
Comedy with a vacuum cleaner as Henry and Dizzy attempt to raise money is a classic. Scenes of Mr Aldrich trying to win many of the physical contests "three-legged races, etc" are also funny. A fine film for the whole family to watch together.

We are so lucky. There are 11 Aldrich family films of varying quality,
from average to great, but the important thing is that we have them. I
love to look for the furniture, the neighborhoods, the style of dress,
and the commercial areas, in the town the Aldrich's live in. You really
can learn an awful lot about the ways of your parents and
grandparents, while laughing and smiling about stories and characters
from long ago. There is the innocence of high school kids back then and
the feeling of optimism that comes with this kind of show. Sure, these
films are not art, but they are amusing and familiar and a fine and
silly way to while away an afternoon or two. The problem is where to
get these films. They are rarely shown on television. Keep an eye on
TCM. Or search the internet for dealers of rare, out of print films. I
actually had to mail away to Australia for a package of all 11 films
and I love them all.
This particular movie has Henry accidentally sinking a motor boat for which he needs to pay compensation. He gets into the usual madcap craziness as he attempts to raise money through various schemes. His father and mother are very well played, but Henry and his pal Dizzy are really something to behold., If you are familiar with the radio show, you know what to expect. Nothing more, nothing less, but a lot of clean cut all American dopiness! I love em!!
This is the third in the Henry Aldrich series. The friendship between Henry
and Dizzy is tested.
Just to impress Dizzy's girlfriend, Henry goes on a blind date. They "rent" a boat, and Henry causes it to sink. Mr. Weeks demands that they pay for it or go to jail. Henry, Dizzy and Phyllis embark on a money-making adventure. Naturally, their schemes cause problems and they get into more trouble than expected.
A most touching scene is at the Lake, when Henry's father Sam Aldrich confronts Henry about the trouble he's in. For the first time, father and son become close and open the lines of communication. The lawyer in Sam comes out.
