Storyline

A homeowner is enjoying his lovely lawn and garden when it's invaded by a couple of gophers with Brooklyn accents. The homeowner attacks, but the gophers outsmart him at every turn: They duck his hoe and shotgun. He gasses them with helium, and they float away -- causing a crow to throw away his bottle. The inflated gophers hit a tree and fall to earth. The gardener fishes for the gophers under his hat; they substitute a tomato, and he cries, thinking he's squished a gopher. Next, he tries the garden hose; the gophers stop the flow until there's a huge blast of water, which they direct back at the homeowner. He hits the ground and starts burrowing himself, surfacing in his fountain. Written by Jon Reeves <jreeves@imdb.com>

gopher the gold (or the silver)

Contrary to what the title may imply, "Gopher Goofy" does not star the Goofy Gophers (y'know, the excessively polite fops?), who debuted many years later. This cartoon features a pair of Brooklyn-accented members of the genus Citellus invading a man's garden. The man tries and tries to get rid of them, but they're always ten steps ahead of him. How are these animals always ahead of the humans?! I get the feeling that this was one of the cartoons that they made as a place holder in between the really great ones (1942 also saw the release of "Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid" and "My Favorite Duck"). But it's still got some funny scenes, especially the end. Worth seeing. Available on YouTube.
