In the world of sports

Love animation, it was a big part of my life as a child, particularly Disney, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, and still love it whether it's film, television or cartoons. Actually appreciate it even more through young adults eyes, due to having more knowledge of it, various animation styles, studios, directors and how it all works.

'Sport Chumpions' is not one of Friz Freleng's, a director who did many great cartoons and a director held in high admiration by me, best, not being one of his funniest, wittiest or freshest. For relatively early Freleng, 'Sport Chumpions' is decent though he would do much better later. It is never what one would call properly hilarious (but is never unfunny), Freleng's later efforts show more evenness and confidence in directing and the story.

It is quite thin in terms of story and the structure is basically an excuse to string the gags along. The gags are amusing enough but lack wit and it does lack invention and sometimes variety even when focusing on more than one sport. While most of the characters are fun enough, others are not particularly interesting and annoy a bit.

However, enough of the characters are fun, even if there is no discernible lead.

The cartoon has some amusing moments, some variety and there is a good deal of liveliness.

Animation is very good, it's fluid in movement, crisp in shading and very meticulous in detail. The music is lovely on the ears, lushly orchestrated, full of lively energy and characterful in rhythm, not only adding to the action but also enhancing it.

Voice acting is terrific, with Robert C Bruce providing snappy narration and Mel Blanc again showing a remarkable and unmatched ability to give individuality to multiple characters.

In conclusion, decent. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Not Much Here

A series of sporting events are featured here. The problem is that the average fan had little personal contact with some of these sports. So maybe I'm being unfair. Obviously, it is a spoof but these things just aren't that funny. The sight gags are OK but the sports are strange. Baseball for instance, has little to do with the sport itself. The swimming announces a breast stroke when the swimmer is not doing a breast stroke. I liked the observer's eyes at the ping pong event.

Sport Champions (1941)

** (out of 4)

If you've seen FONEY FABLES then you'll remember that it was a spoof on famous fairy tales. We'd get the "story" but then a "twist" that makes it different. This film was released before that but deals in the same thing except sports are the subject.

For instance, for archery we see a great sportsman but it turns out he's standing right by the bullseye. You know the annoying baseball catcher who's always screaming and talking? Well, he gets it in this short. SPORT CHAMPIONS is a pretty bland entry because there's just nothing funny here. I'd even argue that the animation itself is rather forgettable and there's just nothing entertaining here. That's not to say this is a horrible short because it isn't. There's just nothing here that's worth watching.

Sports for Dummies... made by Dummies

Warning: Spoilers
"Sport Chumpions" makes pleasure at spoofing sports and it's a pleasure for the viewer too.

The following sports are presented: archery, billiards, ping-pong, skiing, track & field, swimming, canoeing, bicycle racing, baseball, football and auto racing. I say that they are presented but it would more fair to say that they are ridiculed.

Archery, for example, shows an archer dubbed as the "modern Robin Hood". He shoots four bows in the center of the target. Deception rises when we see that the archer is standing at less than a feet from the target.

Canoeing now. The narrator explains that this sport needs excellent cohesion and coordination. It would be more convincing if it was truly shown...

Football presents a very complicated play and attempts to give explications by using a diagram. In the end, the diagram wasn't necessary: it's still unclear...

Each sport vignette is a masterpiece of parody and the laughs go on and on.

The cartoon is also a masterpiece for its animation. Made in 1941, "Sport Chumpions" presents men and women in a very realistic way and far ahead of its time.

The title musical track of the cartoon is also very memorable, with its insisting and hooking beat.

"Sport Chumpions" is a Merrie Melodies forgotten gem. If you have the occasion of watching it only once, don't miss the opportunity. It's so funny that you'll want to watch it over and over.
