For fans of Judy Canova/Jerry Colonna only., 12 February 2001

This is a grade B remake of a silent version of a very dated play. Country hick comes to live with rich relative and everyone is extremely mean to her because of her ignorance and country ways. Of course she saves the day and wins their admiration in the end. This is badly filmed and not very engaging, except when Canova (an original comic talent if ever there was one) and Colonna are on screen. The latter is always worth a number of laughs for his honest and insulting comments - he was kinder than Groucho, but of the same ilk. Canova is a buck-toothed, yeee-haww, down home gal who has an incredible vocal range - she sings seven songs, ranging from down home country to grand opera (Sempre Libera -sp?). It's the sort of thing we're used to from Carol Burnett, but this is the original. If you've never seen her before, it's worth checking her out just to experience her. The film is not much, despite its inexplicable Oscar nom for Art Direction, but Canova and Colonna occasionally make the viewing worthwhile.
