At the outset of World War II, June McCarthy meets Carl Cutler aboard the S.S.Aleria, a British vessel en route to New York from London, where she has been dancing. The ship is sunk in mid-voyage by an unidentified submarine, and Cutler aids in rescuing June. As they arrive safely in Manhattan, June asks Cutler to contact her fiancé, Jimmy Madden, about the use of his stranded freighter, "Apache", in Cutler's "import business." By this action, she has unwittingly aided Cutler, who is an undercover Nazi naval officer, with acquiring a "mother ship" for German submarines in the Atlantic. Cutler charters the "Apache" and also kidnaps June who, he fears, might realize he was responsible for the sinking of the "Alleria." When the ship is at sea, a submarine comes along-side, and the crew climbs aboard to be met by Cutler and his aides in full uniform. Madden is informed that Cutler is now the ship's captain, and then takes the ship on missions of commerce raiding in the Carribbean, with ... Written by Les Adams <>

Every man for himself
13 October 2014 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Henry Wilcoxon (Jimmy) owns a small ship – the Apache - but it's in a bit of a state and he hasn't any cargoes to carry. His girlfriend Carole Landis (June) strikes up a friendship with wealthy Onslow Stevens (Carl) who takes an interest in Wilcoxon's boat. He commissions it for a trip to South America, but on the way, an ulterior motive is revealed.

This is a good film that cracks along and it has a good cast. All except Kathleen Howard (Maggie) who is dreadful and puts on an atrocious fake Scottish accent to make things worse. Thankfully, she disappears from the story early on. The majority of the story is set at sea on board a "mystery sea raider". This film deals with Nazis at sea and it is realistically done – the Germans are indeed very efficient.

The quality of the film I saw wasn't great – recorded onto DVD from a video copy – but it was still an entertaining 73 minutes. Given her short life, I always take extra interest when a Carole Landis film shows up.
