Early on a family is attacked in their home by a mob. A man is shot and killed. Two men are chained to a tree and whipped to death. One man is clubbed in the head with a rifle.

A mob storms the jail in which Joseph Smith is being held. He is shot multiple times and then falls from a second-story window.

In another scene, as the Mormons are leaving their city, the main character's mother is shot in the torso but no wound or blood is seen. She later dies off camera.

Throughout the movie the character of Porter Rockwell forcefully expresses his desire to shoot the Mormon's enemies.
