A boy and his dog
lugonian10 January 2001
"The Biscuit Eater" (Paramount, 1940), directed by Stuart A. Heisler, pre-dates all those sentimental "boy and his dog" tales so popular on 1950s television and Walt Disney family dramas (such as "Old Yeller" in 1957), but I feel this is one of the best of the litter. It features a cast of actors not known for playing lead roles but perform their parts as if those viewing this are watching actual people.

Billy Lee (1929-1989) stars as the little boy, Lonnie, accompanied by his best friend, Text (Cordell Hickman), who is black. They take an unwanted dog from a litter of puppies and hope to train the animal into a champion bird hunter. Richard Lane is featured as Lonnie's father who feels the dog, named Promise, is no good, and doesn't want it around. Of course Lonnie proves Dad wrong as well as everyone else, but something happens to change all that.

Others featured in the cast include: Helene Millard (Mrs. McNeil); Lester Matthews (Captain Ames); and Frederick 'Snowflake' Toones (Text's Dad). The actors, even the animals, are all believable as well as excellent. As Bob Dorian, former host of American Movie Classics cable channel where "The Biscuit Eater" played regularly from 1994 to 1999, says the movie was filmed on location (something rare in those days) in Albany, Georgia. "The Biscuit Eater," at 81 minutes, makes good family viewing. However, the brief scene in the everglades where Lonnie and Text try to retrieve their dog, Promise, from a very old and zombie-like Negro, might scare some younger viewers.

"The Biscuit Eater" was later remade by Walt Disney in 1972 with Johnny Whittaker (Jody of TV's "Family Affair") and George Spell. Thus far, the 1940 original has never turned up on video cassette or DVD. What a pity. (***1/2)

The ultimate kids' tearjerker.
Steve-6028 April 2007
The comment from the person who saw this as an 8 year old certainly brought back memories for me.

I must have seen this film at least three times during the pre-TV days of Saturday morning special programs for children.

If you've ever sat in a theater packed with eight to twelve year olds all bawling their eyes out together, you know it is something you'll never forget.

I was able to find a VHS of the movie in later years and was astonished to find how charming the picture is on the adult level as well.

Kudos, hugs, and kisses to anyone still alive who helped put it together.

An A+ B movie.
Ted-C4 March 2014
The 1940 version of "The Biscuit Eater" is one of the best B movies ever made. Note that I'm using the term "B movie" in its original sense of a low budget film intended to be shown as a second feature. "The Narrow Margin" with Charles McGraw is an example of a B movie that is much superior to the expensive remake (with Gene Hackman), a so-called "A movie". Many reviewers of the Biscuit Eater have expressed the wish to purchase of copy of this movie. I was able to purchase a new DVD of the 1940 original from Loving The Classics. (www.lovingtheclassics.com) for only $14. Their web site lists The Biscuit Eater as one of their best sellers!

Don't watch - it will effect you badly forever
ozdavid19 February 2011
My brother and I watched this on TV in 1960. I was 10 , he was 9. To this day ( and I am not kidding) neither of us are able to watch any movie where the dog or indeed any animal is a central theme to the movie.

The really awful events at the end of the movie are so distressing that my brother and I ( I am now 61 and my brother 60) have effected us for life. There is absolutely nothing redeeming in watching this movie. Forget it completely if you want a "normal" life.

It's just too utterly emotional and totally distressing and very unnecessary. I will never forget how I felt at the age of 10 , as I am still reliving this horrific experience , even now, it has never left me.

A historic film that should be seen by any family with a dog.
rogrodd27 February 2003
This film is the first sound picture filmed entirely on location, with good plot, and great action by the dogs that actually DO their stuff the way they were bred to do. I saw this film over five years ago, and can't seem to find it anywhere, either playing or on tape. I Highly recommend it to all families with any breed of dog in their homes. It's "breed specific" but that is just what it's about. Hope you can find a copy and enjoy it as much as I did.

More Bark Than Bite
ccthemovieman-13 October 2007
The tagline here on this IMDb home page makes this sound like a really sweet, nice and enjoyable movie. "A picture as human and heart-filling as the love of a boy for his dog."

Hey, I'm a sentimental guy, so that sounded good enough for me to spend a few bucks on the rental about a dozen years ago. Well, I guess I went "barking" up the wrong tree: the movie stunk. But - yes, it was still a "nice" film and I wouldn't knock it for that.

What I am knocking it for is having to listen to this (politically-correct) pair of boys (one black, one white) overact for the entire film and moan and groan and weep constantly over the fact that they can't get their dog to hunt. They are trying to make the pooch into a champion and the dog is semi-retarded, or just not into that sort of thing.

So.....the kids moan and groan, moan and groan and overact....too much to sit through.

Looking forward to a DVD

I saw this excellent film on AMC many years ago. It was well-made and moving. I especially liked the natural friendship between the black and white boys. AMC played the movie quite a few times that month, and it was well worth rewatching.

This movie has effected my entire life

Warning: Spoilers
Not sure if it could be called a "spoiler", but the ending of this movie, even right now when I think about it, has forever kept me in tears. I have seen it maybe only 3 times in all these years (am 53 now), and it still never failed to have me so emotional at the end. And even today, when ever I go to a pet store with dogs (even cats now), or when I went to a pound twice to get a new pet, I can not stay in there for long before my voice breaks and I start shedding tears. This movie had such a profound, and ever lasting effect on me, and will till the day I pass away. I LOVE this movie more than anything I have ever seen, and wish it were available on DVD, or even VHS! Yes, even a guy can cry too.

The Biscuit Eater (1940) "Magnificent"
marthasjordan2 October 2005
I have seen The Biscuit Eater (1940) on television and it has been one of my favorite films. Have not seen it in a long time and would like to have a copy of this film. If you know how I can get a copy let me know (marthasjordan@aol.com) please. This is a picture for all ages to see...it has a wonderful lesson on life. What better story to tell about than a boy his good friend and their dog. I have seen the remake of this film the 1972 color version and it is just not the same as the original 1940 black and white version. The 1940 version takes you really back into the era of when the story is taking place and you can go there with the boys and their dog. This movie should really be one of the all time great CLASSIC movies.

Probably the "Old Yeller" of its time.
mark.waltz24 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not all children's stories are happy ones, so not all children's stories are for all children. This is based on a short story by James H. Street and stars Billy Lee and Cordell Hickman as best friends dealing with their love for a runt of a pup born to a bird dog, and go through all sorts of adventures to find it when it's caught on someone else's property.

Lee and Hickman have a spooky moment when they have to cross across logs in an eerie kicking swamp, with various shadows spooking them, one shaped like a giant bat, and one log turning out to be a crocodile. What works out in the pairing of the white and black boys as pals is that both are presented as equals, and their situations are not cutesy wootsy like the friendships in the "Our Gang" series.

This is nicely photographed, and the darker moments of the story are offset by lighter moments that are still realistic. The adult characters are minor, so this is unique in that way as well. Richard Lane as Lee's father isn't a sympathetic character so it's better that he doesn't have many scenes. Fred Toones is given a cliche free character as the black ranch hand, a rarity of the time. A film deserving of classic status, definitely better than the good but schmaltzy Disney remake.

Best dog and boy movie ever. How can I get a copy?
brosandy28 October 2001
This is more than a great story. It features the best hunting dog photography I've ever seen. The movie shows a way of life and cultural images that are long forgotten, as well.

The real tragedy is that no one seems to be able to find a copy of this movie. Please contact me if you know how to get a copy

Great movie, very sad as well
bmaclin9916 July 2019
Every time this came on TV when I was a kid, I watched it. Cried every time at the end. But I still consider it to be one of my all-time favorites.

I have a poor-quality DVD copy of this film that was transferred from VHS. It's grainy and a little wavy, but still watchable.

I purchased the DVD online many years ago, I think it was $2 or thereabouts plus shipping. The seller said that this movie had fallen into the public domain because the studio wasn't interested in extending the copyright. Apparently they also destroyed or misplaced the original film, so any hope of a re-mastered DVD or BD is pretty much not going to happen.

A wonderfully surprising "rite of passage" film
Syrup5 March 2000
Much more than the story of a boy and his dog but a mature look at the coming of age of two boys as experienced through the travails of Promise, their misfit hunter. Extremely engaging view of the pre-WW2 South with subtle religious undertones. I've seen it three times and have found something new with each viewing. The fact that we own six dogs helps account for our affection for The Biscuit Eater.
