Storyline

A group of men are on the sailboat the Scirocco heading down the Pacific coast to go fishing, but not just ordinary fishing. Among the group is archer Howard Hill who has used this skill in the past for big game hunting. Hill practices his archery skill by using a life preserver as a target, and by shooting flying fish gliding above the water. This practice is all in the preparation for the main target, the great blue marlin, which Hill plans on shooting with a specially rigged bow and arrow like harpoon, before the marlin is brought in by conventional rod and reel. After Hill gets to reel one in, he gives the turn to one of his less experienced crew. Regardless of if they get the fish, the act of marlin fishing is fraught with danger as the marlin tries to win the battle. Written by Huggo

Sword Fishing (1939)

*** (out of 4)

Oscar-nominated short has Ronald Reagan narrating the story of "the world's greatest archer" Howard Hill who jumps on a boat and shows off his skill by shooting various fish including a marlin. This is a mildly entertaining short but needless to say members of PETA might want to stay away as there are quite a few fish that are killed and the large marlin seems to suffer quite a bit before finally dying. With that out of the way, there's nothing overly special about the short but it doesn't make for a bad ten-minute filler. The film pops up quite often on Turner Classic Movies so someone there must think it's very entertaining. Reagan's narration is actually very good as he comes off rather energetic and the archery shots are also nicely done.
