French celebrity philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy may be a private man, but he sometimes likes to share the mail he gets. One letter in particular, presented via the Huffington Post, has caught people’s attention – a note from his friend, fugitive rapist Roman Polanski thanking Levy and his journal, “La Règle du jeu,” for vigorously supporting the auteur from day one. In the message, Polanski savors the messages he has received from all over the place and »

The decision to free Roman Polanski is a wise decision. It honors the people who took it. It shows that the arguments developed by the movie director's partisans -- including those published on the French review's website of La Règle du Jeu -- have finally been fruitful. It shows that Polanski's French lawyers, Hervé Témime and Georges Kiejman, were right to remain tenacious. At this very moment, I am thinking about Emmanuelle, his wife. I am thinking about his two kids who saw their dad's name ignominiously dragged through the mud. I am mostly thinking about him: Roman Polanski, who I don't know, but whose fate has moved me so much. Nothing will repair the days he has spent in prison. Nothing will erase the immense, unbelievable injustice he has been subjected to. Nothing will take away the hysteria of »

The foreign trades are full of all kinds of fun, weird surprises. Take this news that emerged Thursday from the Mumbai Film Festival: The city's Enlighten Film Society acquired Indian DVD rights for Lars von Trier's Antichrist. That would add the grim, gory, explicitly sexual film to Enlighten's catalog of world-cinema classics including The Rules of the Game, Bicycle Thieves, 2001: A Space Odyssey and more. There might be a slight hold-up in bringing it home, though: "We are currently talking to the sensor [sic] board for a clearance for the film; based on their response we will release the movie on DVD in India." Memo to India: If the entrails-devouring fox looks or sounds anything like this, then you've definitely got the censored version. [Business of Cinema] »

My journal, La Règle du jeu, is working in support of Roman Polanski and mobilizing writers and artists through the following petition: Apprehended like a common terrorist Saturday evening, September 26, as he came to receive a prize for his entire body of work, Roman Polanski now sleeps in prison. He risks extradition to the United States for an episode that happened years ago and whose principal plaintiff repeatedly and emphatically declares she has put it behind her and abandoned any wish for legal proceedings. Seventy-six years old, a survivor of Nazism and of Stalinist persecutions in Poland, Roman Polanski risks spending the rest of his life in jail for deeds which would be beyond the statute-of-limitations in Europe. We ask the Swiss courts to free him immediately and not to turn this ingenious filmmaker into a martyr of a politico-legal imbroglio that is unworthy »

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed X-Men Origins: Wolverine I wish DVD and Blu-ray sales were more readily available, because it will be interesting to see what kind of business this title does. Fanboys seemed to hate this film across the board, so I can't help but wonder how many of them will buy it on the down low and hide it under their bed when their friends come over. I, for one, actually didn't think it was all that bad. It was, at the very least, entertaining. This isn't to say I think you should buy it, but it works as a one-time watch. The Ultimate Force of Four
Hero / Zatoichi / Iron Monkey / The Legend of Drunken Master Buena Vista Home Entertainment sent me these and I am going to be watching all four and bring you a review hopefully by the end of the week. »
