I was surprised when i learned that this picture was released in the united states in 1940 but we weren't in the war yet and we were naive about the Nazis. I just saw the movie ,but, if i didn't read the synopsis, my comment would not come out right . Heinz Ruhmann plays Hugo ,head of the marriage license state bureau, I thought he was a divorce lawyer when I saw him with those two women ,but he was divorcing his second wife and the other was his first. Well ,his landlady has design on him too. At a maritime reunion he meets his two old sailor buddies,Ceasar, played by Joseph Sieber,Balduln, played by the underrated Hans Brausewetter. This is when they sing the German classic song ,"Das Kahn Dosh Seeman Nicht Ershuttern- Rose Marie.They would repeat the performance in Request Consert, 1940.Well they come home to Hugo's drunk and the land lady get's mad and kicks Hugo out. So they decide to look for an apartment to roommate together. This is were the laughs start. when they have so much furniture in their place it becomes too crowded.while Balduln and Ceasar bring in their grandfather clocks Hugo gets a small one from an auction.The upstairs neighbor paces with her hi heels on causing their chandeliers to shake, Hugo insults her by buying her and surprising her with slippers. But when Hugo becomes interested in his landlady, he decides to get his two ex wives interested in his friends.This kind of German film classic is not popular in the united states on home video cause it's not a propaganda film . Big and medium corporations prefer to sell the propaganda one more than escapist ones cause it makes a faster dollar. this is a slow dollar classic
